My plan was to remove the fuel solenoid and use the cable option. When I unbolted enough stuff (see sig) to finally get at the VE pump... there is no mech fuel shut off lever.

There is a place wher the shaft would go but it is blocked/plugged, (or the shaft was sheared off, but I don't think so).

Anybody see this before?

Thanks any info or opinions.

There should be a lever on the (engine's) left side of the pump (similar to the throttle lever, but noticeably different) just below and forward of the AFC housing. If not, you have a different vintage VE than the rest of us, but most other VEs I have seen had the same manual shutoff. A picture is worth a thousand words if you can get the camera in there.

I haven't seen one without a lever yet, and I've seen alot of 'em. Must be you have a mutant pump? You know, on 2nd thought, I don't remember seeing one on Dave's bus when I had my head in the fender... ... ... . Are you having problems with it Joe?

Thanks Pete; Daniel. I'm not having trouble, just thought while I had unbolted lots of stuff to get clear access it would be a good idea to switch to cable.

I checked using pump diagrams, and it's not there.

Is there another way to shut down fuel without harm?

Also, there is a bracket at the rear of the pump, mounted on the engine, that looks like it should be bolted to the pump. It's not. A problem?

I'll have to get up to speed on the picture thing.

Thanks.

That sounds kind of goofy, why not just buy a replacement fuel shut off solenoid and be done with it??? Who would want a cable operated fuel shut-off anyway?

The engine and inj pump are almost inaccessible on this rig(front engined Motorhome). While I have removed ,unbolted, sawzalled and grindered everything to get to the pump I thought I might go mechanical and not have to worry about a future solenoid failure.

The solenoid might last forever, I'd rather bet on a lever and cable.

I never woulda guessed! :-laf

Joe, there should be a bolt in that bracket on the rear of the pump. It helps support the pump. I can't say if or how long before something breaks, if at all. Peace of mind? Priceless! ;)

Have you ever had to replace a fuel solenoid on VE Pump? One that has the pump bracket unmolested? On the side of the road etc? Now complicate that times ten with Jgolden's Cummins shoehorned into a motorhome set-up.

I am a member of the manual shut off club and have no intentions of replacing the electric solenoid to have my turned up pump eat it again in six months!:-laf

Thanks Pete,

I figured it needed a bolt, thought I would check.

PS: Got pretty good brake parts service from Tracy Road Equiptment-Freightliner in Albany. There is one in East Syracuse too.

I'll have to mention it to Dave G, in case he needs anything for the "Wonder Bus".

Do These Photos Help You any?

This is how the old motorhome Cummins looks, might help.

Don, It looks like that rear bracket on yours dosen't have a bolt ?

Can't see if you have a manual fuel shut off, is there one ?

I got my rig off a dealer lot, and they gave no info on previous owner. I have some repair info, but no history on the pump, if no manual lever is unusual then I wonder where the pump came from.

Not a big problem, just curious.

Thanks.

Yep, there is a bolt in there, it is on the opposite side from the view in the photo, it screws into that "thing" that looks like a short piece of pipe welded on the block bracket. The bracket on the right side is separate and bolts onto the block, then bolts to the bracket on the pump, with a slot so you can adjust pump timing.

I have been following this thread with toungue in cheek, expecting you to "find" the fuel shutoff any day now. Mine does have a fuel shutoff, spring loaded too. I was going to go to a pull shutoff at first too, but it is in a diesel pusher, and that is one looooooooong cable to the front. When I had the pump rebuilt they put in a new fual solenoid, so just decided to keep it original and scrapped the idea.

Something I did since it was so darned hard to see the pump etc, was to hold my digital camera down in the hole and flash shots, then study it all on big screen monitor. Then when I started wrenching I knew exactly what I was feeling down there.

Oh I forgot. IF I were a sloppy mechanic getting paid by the hour on some old truck, I would probably just pitch the bracket in the trash, and nobody would ever know the difference!

Joe, in the bottom pic, even with the bottom line on the left, is the lever.

I wouldn't buy from Tracy's here, the parts guys are A- holes! We deal with them thru work, there is only one we have good luck with, and he works on construction stuff, not trucks. I understand they are busy, but when you go to pick up parts, they ignore you until they feel you've suffered enough.

OK, took some picture that I'll post soon. No mechanical fuel shut off.

Great to have access to the pump. Got the idle down, fuel screw right there to play with, reconfigured the throttle cable and trans cable bracket so I can trim the stock pump bracket for easy(?) removal of the shut off solenoid(if I have to) if the mech shut off does not appear(I look every day. . )

Cut down lawn chair to fit in under wheel well. (motorhome jacked up and sitting on big wooden blocks. )

Any reason to mess with the high idle?

Need to plan a test drive... ...

I guess I will have to leave this forum now, my signature motorhome departed for its new home in Houstin/Galveston area this afternoon, will be doing the RV thing with my second gen Cummins now.

Keep checking, that fuel shutoff should show up any day now . . . . . .

Don, thanks for the pictures and the help.

See you down the road.

Hey Joe! (that sounds like a song... . ?) You should put in a 3200 spring while you are right there! :D And yes, back that screw all the way out.

Don, don't be a stranger, stop back often!
