Hi guys, a problem I have never seen before. Went to the store this am, all ok. Came out started the truck and all the warning lites came on (check engine, abs, airbags, low fuel. None of the gauges work, including the speedo and tach. Throwing three codes: P 1694 and P 1698, up and down. These codes have to do with trans, I believe. Odometer flashes at startup then reads: 'No Bus' (possibly No Bu5). I checked fuses under dash and under hood. none blown. Truck seems to run ok.
Anybody got an idea?

The no bus message on the odometer means the instrument cluster has lost communication with the CCD (Chrysler Collision Detection) buss... a communication network between the ECM, PCM, ABS, and instrument cluster.

Since the truck is running normally, it's unlike the ECM or PCM is at fault. It could be just the instrument cluster.

Try shoving the instrument cluster into the dash. Sometimes the multipin connector at the back loses good continuity.

Regards,

John L.

Thanks

Thanks John, I will give it a try in the afternoon tomorrow, after I return from Wreaths Across America (Placing wreaths on Vets graves). Paul

Check the harness connectors on the firewall under the hood above and behind the fuel filter. Those are the most common for corrosion and connection issues.

I remember a post years ago that had problems similar to yours, although the truck did not have any codes.

After alot of frustration trying to locate the problem it ended up being a loose negative wire on one of the batteries.

response

OK guys, the weather is a bit better and I managed to get a new boot (blown achilles tendon) so I will go out in the sun this am and try underhood connectors and ground wires... . will also pull the drag comp out of the circuit and see if that helps. If no joy, I will flatbed it to my mech... . Total Performance Diesel in Santa Rosa (unabashed plug)... they do great work. Paul

still no gauges, setting codes

Ok, I plugged and unplugged everything I could find with no positive result. Ground cables looked fine and were tight. Off it went to Total Performance Diesel in Santa Rosa. Drake will sort it out. Thanks to everyone who helped. Paul

fill us in when you find out the issue as it is an intresting problem & may help someone else in the future, hope it all works out for ya.

The hunt begins

The shop called this am to let me know that they were beginning to chase the bug... we shall see. I will post the solution(s) as I hear about them.

If that don't work... . I had kind of the same thing happen a couple of years ago. All the dash gagues went down and all the warning lights came on. I never checked for codes so that part I'm not sure is the same. Anyway I found by wiggling the clump of wires UNDER the dash next to the steering collum by the firewall (there is a big white connector there) fixed it. Why it happen... . I don't have a clue but once I fixed it I secured the wires with a bunch of cable ties.

Hope that helps.

Its a Miracle....stay tuned

So Drake called this am... . brought in his specialty electronics guy who looked at it and said, " what's the problem, all the gauges are working". Badump!

Honest guys, when it went on the flatbed for the 50 mile trip, it wasn't working; as previously described. So, maybe it was a loose wire? I will check the white connector under the dash and look for a short or something? If it is an intermittent fault, it should show up again... maybe time for a common rail... . but, I love my dually (even with the VP44). Who knows, by the time I bring it home?

its fixed?

OK, went down and picked up the truck this pm. All is working fine... no gauge probs at all. Drake did a few vacuum lines for me and gave it back. Total cost for, at least, an hours labor: a handshake and a merry christmas. One more reason I like working with Drake. When was the last time a dealer, no matter how good, did that for ya? Tomorrow, I will go check out the white connector (thanks robert) and tie up those wires, who knows, I may yet make it fail. If it does, the solution appears to be to ride it around on a AAA flatbed for 50 miles!:-laf If it does it again and I find the problem, I will be back to this thread. Meanwhile, I do believe it is a wiring problem somewhere.

BTW, Total Performance Diesel did a dyno day last month and it should be appearing in Diesel World (I think), since they showed up. I understand that there were 8 trucks there over 1000hp. Should be a good article. Thanks to all who helped. I just love the smell of diesel in the morning. Oo.
