I'm posting here because this is a 1st gen transmission from a 1st gen cummins 4x4 truck.

I just installed a used(recently built)fresh 727 into my Jeep behind the 4bt cummins. Any way, I changed the filter and fluid before firing it up. The old fluid was clean, and the filter looked good also. I refilled the transmission with atf+3. Started the engine, dropped into gear, and nothing. It doesn't even think about doing anything in any gear.

Here are the things I checked: Fluid level is ok, I actually overfilled it a little thinking it might need more to pick up. ; I took the torque converter bolts out and made sure the converter was in properly, and engaged to the pump drive, seems ok without pulling trans. I pulled the cooler lines and test ran it with both lines off, both lines were dry, and no fluid came out of either port, in any gear. The shifter is properly moving the shift shaft coming out of the trans. I pulled the pressure port plugs at the servo and accumulator, no fluid comes out of either when running.

This has me really confused and upset.

Maybe I'm overlooking something, hopefully something simple. I'm hoping one of you guys may have some knowledge on this type of thing or experience with this problem.

The one thing I'm going to check tonight is the filter, thats the only thing that I really changed and I'm hoping to remove it and find out that it was made wrong or something.

Thanks in advance for any help or assistance.

Seane, you didn't say how much fluid you put in it. And did you remember to start it in "neutral"? Even if you could put the filter in wrong, it would still pump some fluid. And you said you checked to see that the converter was in properly. So I will assume the pump is turning. I wonder, is the bellhousing holding the trans close enough the keep the converter ingaged to the pump? I have never done this swap so I don't know.

I would check to see that the pump is being turned by the converter. Easy way is to check the depth of the converter face to the bellhousing mounting surface. Compare this to the one in your truck.

If that is good, it's time to pull it.

Sorry

HDM48 may have made a good point with the depth thing. The 4 and 6 cylinder engines are exactly alike as to the back of the engines but is there some kind of spacer that is required on the crank. I have never had my auto out of the 92. Anybody know about this. If a spacer was required, you may not be engageing the pump drive. I will be watching this post to see what the outcome is.

I'm just going by memory here. . (which leaves something to be disired) but... as I recall if you run the engine without the transmission in "N" (after adding the first 4-5 quarts) you can kill the pump in the transmission due to it's running dry...

I strongly recommend you call a transmission specialist... my signature shows who I'd call... .

Sounds like you might have taken the ears off of the pump assy. If the converter had sliped forward during your install and disengaged itself from the pump. When you bolted it down it would have bound up the pump. Upon starting the engine it would have sheared the ears off. I have seen this before on fresh installs.

Your statement of no pressure or fluid flow at any ports or cooler lines means pump is not working. Time to R&R. :(

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. I went out and started checking things. I had compared between the 727 in the Jeep and the 518 in the truck on other things before, but I never looked at the adapter between the engine and trans. When I first built the Jeep, I installed a nv4500, so it has a manual trans adapter. Well after comparing it to my '91 Dodge auto, the manual adapter is about 1 1/8" thicker, and was holding the torque converter out of the pump. I should have checked this before, but I thought the adapter was the same for stick or auto.

So, heres my fix... . Put the nv4500 into my Dodge, and swap the adapters. I have all the pedals and hydraulics, I just need a np205 transfer case for a first gen 5-speed. If any of you guys know where I could find one let me know.

Again, thanks for the help.

Just for FYI there are two adapter's that dodge used one is for a lockup transmission and the other is for a non lockup transmission. The one the lockup transmission is thicker which would set the trans farther back and may not contact the pump. Thats darn strange not to have any fluid at all come out of that thing. Even if the pump was shot you would think that something would come out.
