I have a 1997 diesel cummins. While driving down the road with wife, headlights turned off. I said what the he double toothpick#@$%! . And she said oh that has happened to me several times. I said thank you for telling me now:-{} . Well when we made it home, after playing with switch, and headlights them self decided to come back on. I checked connections, wirring, and switch, to no avail. While it is not happening, except intermittently. Does anyone have ideas, this has not happened since a couple of months ago. Thank you very much for any help.

Only time I have seen that problem, the connector and or switch is burnt. Can buy switch and pigtail connector if needed.

My headlights would not work intermittently in the morning. I found Western plow light relays inline with the stock headlight harness. I have removed the plow light harness (and soon old plow frame) and the problem is gone. Check for wiring add-ons or butt-connectors, may be a simple fix.

My headlights have failed to come on 3 or 4 times for a few seconds. It always happened when it was very cold (below 20*) and always when it's dark. :-laf

I don't have any relays or anything else in-line. I figure there's a relay or something that sticks when it's cold. The headlight switch is original and has never given me any trouble. It doesn't seem to matter what I do to get them to come on. I've turned them on and off, flipped them from bright to dim, revved the engine, all to no avail. They just come on when they want to.

check the switch before it has a complete melt down and get the Summit harness to take the load off of the switch and get brighter lights to boot :)

bright lights sounds great, especially driving in the mountains when camping. Also what about the wiring harness, where would I get these items. For everybody else thank you very much. I did replace switch, because when in the mountains it is very dark, when this happened we were in town.

My headlights have also failed to come on 3 different times in the last year.
If I remember correctly after I changed from low to high beams a few times they started.
I need to know if this is the on off switch or the dimmer switch?

Mine does something similar depending on the tilt of the steering. If the wheel is tilted low the low beams don't come on.

Mine did that as well. Replace the multifunction/dimmer switch. It may look okay when you remove it, but they only last for so long. Took only about 30 minutes and was a $50 part at the dealership I was working at. You'll need a tamper-proof Torx set to do the job BTW.

While driving home from work at 4:50 am cst on I-85 I put my lights on bright. My finger slipped off the dimmer switch as I pulled it back. NO lights again.
What size and where can I buy the "tamper proof torx set"?

local autosupply store. Also flaten a 1/4 wrench, so not to have angle on box end, makes it much easier to remove. Then you can leave steering wheel on. (patience though)You know I forgot about how often those multifunction levers out so fast.
