I confused everyone by dragging up an ancient thread. This problem apparently got fixed a long time ago, but I'm just encountering it for the first time. I just need to know whether the wiring already exists and I just needed to plug in the relay, or do I need the overlay wiring to go with the relay? Per my signature, I have a `94 with the factory tow package. thanks,
Travis

Travis,
I have seen tow packages NOT include the wiring on certain older vehicles. Often it would only include the heavy duty cooling, battery, turnsignal flasher and hitch. The electrics were added depending on application - 4 pin, 6 pin, 7 pin, etc. I can't say on the early gen 1 rams, though. My old '97 did not have the tow package so a little creative wiring was necessary. It did have the brake controller connector under the dash, sans the blue brake power wire. Some of the early factory tow harnesses were modified to add a relay that would use the lights on wire to energize the relay then use battery power to operate the tail/running lights on the trailer.
A little investigating may help. Find the pin in the 7-pin recepticle (or other recepticle) that goes to the tail/running lights. Trace that wire back and see if it goes to the PDC. If it does then you have a good chance that the relay will be effective. If you find it scotch-locked into the main chassis harness on the light circuit a modification will be necessary. Also, look down the recepticle in the PDC where the tow relay should go. You should see female spade electrical connectors in the openings.

I did 2 things for my situation and so far it is working good. .

1. I use ALL LED lights on the truck and my 36' 5er. Save for the front park and turn signals.

2. I put a small hole in the A/C Duct just behind the Headlight switch so when driving there is always a slight cool flow of air to the switch to keep it from getting too hot.

Less heat

The light switch is lite! Do not over loade it. Need on that will take more ofa load.

That is the exact reason the relay kits from Danial Stern, and other sites, are used they take 90% of the load off the switch = less heat. As an added extra bonus the headlights get more voltage and are brighter, noticeably brighter on my truck.

What ya'll need to do is get the Harness Adapter that plugs into the orginal Head Light Bulb Recepticals. This get rid of the load going to the dash switch. YOU WILL SEE BRIGHTER LIGHTS. Rex McKinney 1995 2500 260000 going strong.
