OK a bit of encouragement 163k - knock on wood - still on factory VP, finally dumped POS DC LP and went with GFS-392 system + big lines, a few other tweaks here and there and pumping out 525HP / 998. 98TQ. Sucker runs like a raped ape!!!!!

My 2000 has run great since day 1. vp44 was replaced 2 yrs ago when the truck would start stumbling every now and again. Put a fass system on to try to keep the new pump in good shap. Replaced the cam sensor also. I purchased the truck from a friend of mine and it was reliable for him from 70,000mi to 150,000 (when I bought it), don't belive it ever let him sit, and it hasn't let me sit either. I love this truck, I just love my 97 a little more.
I'm less than 100 miles away from 165K. Had valves adjusted at 150K as per the maintenance schedule. Cam position sensor went out at 152K but the engine ran until I could replace it. Regular service at recommended intervals keeps it running good. Same can be said about my '01 TDI with 150K. I sure don't miss changing spark plugs!
Because of you guys I finally started driven my truck like it should be driven and no more worries. Really finally starting to love my truck this time. Thanks to you all, I'm very happy
A friend of mine has a 02' F150 gasser work truck that "HAD" 100k mile sparkplugs. 80k and 2 plugs broke about 1/4" off and dropped that into the cylinder and they bounced around for about 100 miles. Took it to the dealer, 4 more were severly cracked and about to break.
Had to pull the engine, heads, re-polish / bore? (clean up) the cylinders with the broken plugs. $4500 to get it back.
I couldn't stand the fuel system on my 99... which is why I got rid of it. And I tried to "fix" it and spent considerable money and time doing so. To no avail. The lift pumps still failed no matter where you put them or what kind of restrictions you removed etc.
I wasn't going to spend $1000 on some radical fuel delivery system. I spent about $400 goofing around with the Carter and any more would have been just too much for something that I didn't feel should have been my responsibility anyhow. I guess I must not have enough money laying around to say "Ya... its a great truck even though I had to install 2 new injection pumps and I got a cracked 53 block. But its great otherwise". In my house, that represents about $4000 (if you JB weld the block) in repairs to an already expensive truck. And thats hard to explain.
Not saying I would never get another 2nd gen. I just might. But I had better see some real long term solutions to the lift pump and VP44 failures. That left a terrible taste in my mouth... enough for me to get rid of the 1 vehicle I had waited so long to afford.
I almost bought a superb 99 Sport 4x4 this summer... but when I saw the 53 on the block I quit right then. But I can say one thing... maybe the TDR has made me too smart. Too much reading on here and you might not ever buy a Cummins Dodge of any year . I spent 2 hours going over the truck and checking everything known to fail on them and looking for mod evidence. Its sad because I would have given this model another chance as it was really really original and nice. Original lift pump at 100K too. Go figure.
Not quite 70K on mine. The only problems Ive had have been one LP, the VP44, and I had to replace the thermostat. Oh, and the steering is just a little looser than I would like (but not bad at all)
Great truck. Ive never regretted my decision to buy it. The only mod I have is an EZ box. It gets great mileage unloaded, and I get 12-15mph towing my 19ft TT.
I too bought an 02 knowing it was the last of that era. My thinking being that they had worked most of the bugs out of that model, and I just dont like to buy a car/truck when it is first introduced (too many unknowns).
Don't have too many miles on it (78000 in almost 7 years), but love it. One little problem was a/c equipment under dash rotted and needed to be replaced. Expensive, but that was at the dealer. I suspect this was due to water collecting in the fan area and me not realizing it to clean it out. While it was in the shop for this, I had them check the operation of the lift pump just for kicks. Turns out it was operating at only 1/2 specs, so I had it changed out. Used the new one for a while and put in a Fass when modded the truck. Other that that, it's been GREAT and a wonderful experience. Towed my RV from CT to South Dakota and back last summer at max (if not a bit over) weight and never once complained. Couldn't have asked for a better machine! Dealer once called here to do a customer satisfaction survey and in the process tried to tell me about great financing deals on new trucks so that I would trade mine in. Told them they didn't have enough money to convince me to get rid of my truck-don't want a new one!
Bought mine with 87,000 on it and was completly stock. Now at 195,000 and only had 2 lp's die, rebuilt the front end and now the trans is due for a o/h. Lots of trailer service miles, and went this long can't really ***** too much. . Love the truck and would buy another just next time a 6 spd. just for the reason they are more fun to drive and tow with. . imo
I have owned mine since it was new. I have 80000 miles on it. The only problems I have had are normal wear and tear items. replaced both batteries, serpentine belt, exhaust system and lift pump. So far everything is running good, knock on wood. I plan on running it till the body falls off.
