I was out in Arkansas this last week and saw signs posted in some small towns in western part of the state that said no jake brakes allowed. Just wondering why they would ban the use of Jake Brakes in town.

Have you ever heard a jake brake on an 18 wheeler? Tends to wake people up late at night, make babies cry ect... ... This sign does not apply to pickups

Trucks with poor mufflers, or no mufflers make a noise that when the engine brake is applied is very loud... ...

Trucks with current mufflers, don't make this sound... . however most townships, or citys still outlaw the use of engine brakes because of the old trucks that were un muffled... .

Even though it applies to all engine brakes... . most areas still call it a Jake Brake, even though there are a lot of manufactures of engine brakes...

They are referring to an engine brake, which is what the class 8's use. It is the true "Jake Brake" named after Jacobs mfg who mfg it for Cummins.

It works entirely differnet than than what we have on our Pickup engines.

They thru elec controls and oil pressure open the exhaust valve at near top of compression so that the compression effort is wasted and hence the engine becomes a brake.

Our Exhaust brake merely shuts down the exhaust to make an air compressor out of the engine.

The true "Jake" brake is quite loud if exhausted thru and un muffled exhaust system

If the sign says "Jake Brake" then Cummins would like to know. I saw on their web site that they and Jacobs are sending "cease and desist"-type letters to towns using the name Jake Brake on their signs. They also have an informational program for cities to get them proper info concerning the various types of brakes and which ones are the problem.

My friend owns a garbage hauler comp. he has a mack roll off and he LOOOVEs the jake.
He just happends to pass by the mayors house 2-3 times a day. after a couple of weeks go by he gets a phone call and its the mayor:)
He told him that when he goes by the house with the jake on it knocks his nick-nacks off of the mantle:-laf Boy was he mad.

i think he gave him a couple warnings, next time its a fine:-laf

We would like to thank all of you who have let us know about brand specific signs like the one below. Since "Jake Brake" is our registered trademark, we like to know where it is being used.

If you see any signs that use the brand name like this, please let us know what Route number, City/Town and State you saw the sign by sending an E-mail to: -- email address removed --.

Digital photos are very much appreciated also. Thank you!

Yeah Exhaust brakes are usually fine, Engine brakes or engine retarders depending on where you are are the ones not allowed. I do like the sound of a engine brake, I wish we could get one for our trucks, or at least have the option.

This one one thing that I cannot understand. These towns do not want the engine brakes used due to noise. Now if you want to cruise down the street on your Harley with straight pipes and the sound bouncing off every house up and down the street they are ok with that. Just another screwed up item on my list of W. T. F. Not to upset Harley owners here but come on.

I personally enjoy that sound and I can't help but laugh when I hear it cause everyone around is looking trying to figure out that noise.

The towns in Nebraska where I saw signs had HEAVY truck traffic. Flat and level,35 mph speed limint as a rule and LOTS of big rigs going through 24/7

I was going thru a tunnel in a convertable near LA and a trucker got next to me an did the jake brake trick and scared the crap out of me. Very loud in a tunnel, especially without any warning.
