Our 1990 work truck has a intermitent starting problem. Starter will not turn over the selenoid does not even click when you turn the key. It will tow start and run fine and may even start a few times when you get back to the shop. We have replaced the clutch switch which did not make a difference. Any sugestions would be great.

Check the relay on the driver fender just behind the battery. This relay runs the starter solenoid. My 89 had a problem with corrosion on the terminals. Also there is a lead coming from the battery to the relay, a red/brown wire combo that feeds the relay.

Check it out. Other than that the ign switch is next, which isn't at the key but on the lower end of the colum(my 89 didn't have tilt).

Good luck, let us know how it goes.

we replaced the relay and still nothing, the relay does click and we almost smoked the red and brown wires by trying to jumper at the seloniod.

Well I guess its time to pull the starter and check out the solenoid for some loose connections and repair/replace as necessary. If that relay clicks, there should be power to the solenoid. Check that I guess. Else its rip and tear time.

Well we pulled the starter and sure enough the brushes were plum worn out. Then called Napa and they said there is no rebuildable parts in starter but they would happily sell me a new one. I am going to start a new thread if anyone has rebuilt the brushes in their starters. thanks for all the help.
