Purchased an 89 without a key. Wheel is in lock position. They cut shaft ! Anyway to get a key? Doors are missing also.

this is one of those threads where you want to help but are you also helping someone else who would abuse this information?

I'd say go to a dealer and inquire.

You can take the lock cylinder out of the column and take it to a locksmith. You will need a "tamper proof" torx bit to get it out, at least my 91 was like that IIRC.

A locksmith will be able to make a key from the cylinder.

The ignition and doors are keyed alike.

My advice... get several keys.

It's a 4X4 duallie, no engine, doors, hood, or flat bed. Even so my tractor loader will barely get the wheels off the ground ! Would like to steer it to get it in storage.

If you have or can locate the key code a locksmith will be able to make a key without removing the ign. lock. I used to do it all the time when I was in the business. If you go to the trouble of removing the lock you might as well buy a new lock, the cost is about the same.

Just checked it out, in the dark, but I can feel the key part is wrecked. It turns to far an freely. Wheel is still locked. Not sure if I will ever put it on the road so not ready to spend a lot on switch - key. Might be easier to change column. I already have to replace shaft as they got 'torch' happy. Would the wiring be any different than a gasser auto trans ? It,s a ctd 5spd. thanks

Not positive on what columns would interchange, but the auto column is different than the stick. I know the stick has a key-off lockout tab you need to push to release the key. The auto column simply needs to be in 'park'. You'd need a stick column to be the best match, and make sure you get one from a truck with the right turn signal multi-switch. I know '87's had the wiper control on the dash and '89 in the turn sig multi switch (along with headlight dimmer). I don't know about '88.

The die cast chrome bezel on these ignitions is prone to separating from the lock assy and turning freely. I'm betting the key slot of the lock isn't turning and this bezel is turning.

Does the truck have the locking glove box? If not, might just be better to start over with parts from another truck and key it all the same. Door locks are easy to disassemble and re-key.
