Ci4 & Ci+4

Well, sorry to say I am out of my stock of CI4+ and am forced to use the CJ4 stuff. In that the oil change interval for my 2004. 5 with the CI4+ is 7,500 miles heavy usage and 15,000 miles normal, should I be thinking of changing oil at a lower mileage due to the differences in the CJ4 oil?

I just bought Rottela T at Wally World and it has the CI+4. Very reasonable. I also looked into the Valvoline Premium Blue Classic which has the CI+4. It was available through O'Reilly's and NAPA and I'm sure others on special order in 5 gals. CI+4 is a must for our valve trains and especially for the cam lobes. I'm sure a lot of people would be surprised when and if they would pull their cams if they are NOT using the CI+4. I don't care who's cam it is,... you'd find spalling (flaking on the lobe area).

Why take a chance, The original formulation that the engine was designed for is still available. Got three 5 gal buckets from my cummins dealer today. There is no mention of CJ4 on the label as some have reported. The key is to ask for the "classic" formulation.

Richard -
I'm sure nobody wants to "take a chance"!

Nice picture - yes, Valvoline still shows the part number on
their site.
Unfortunately for some of us - - your pic is the closest we
get to one of the 5 gallon pails!

BTW - Cummins dealer is a good idea (worth a call), but
not close here.

These guys have a huge following in the air-cooled VW and musclecar/racing crowd.

There's a HUGE problem with these engines if they're flat-tappet (which almost all are, especially the air-cooled VW's) with the cams going flat.

I can post some links if interested.

One high-end VW engine builder, Jake Raby, mandates this oil and no other for his engines, some which run over 10 grand.

Don't know if the Diesel oil is listed on the site, but they have it.

Not sure what you're saying here. WHO "has" CI-4 Plus?
The store or the oil?

A previous poster said something similar.
"says CI-4 Plus is in there" - right in the specs.

If you read the specs -carefully- and they indicate:
"CJ-4, meets API spec CI-4 Plus ... . etc. " -
it's -NOT- the "old" CI-4 Plus.
Also - check the "donut" (on gallons and quarts that has the specs).
If *CJ-4* is on there anywhere, it's the "new" forumula.

("Meets" - does *NOT* mean - "better than" - or - "as good as" !!)

Info direct from Valvoline and NAPA - has been ambiguous at best.
Bottom line - none available. Some suppliers may have old stock on hand.

However - in searching for Valvoline Premium Blue Classic (still shows on
their website) at Cummins, I talked to their main distribution center.
Guy on the phone couldn't find the (Valvoline) part number listed anymore
for 5 gal pail #V V 591839.

Pretty much what I heard from NAPA, Kragens, and a local parts store gent
who orders the store's oil. He tried - said his distributor told him it's no longer available.

Soooooo - figured I would stop by a local Cummins parts & repair facility.
Asked about the Valvoline - with Valvoline print-out in hand. Nope. Mentioned *why* I was looking for same.

He says, "I've got CI-4 Plus - Delo 400 15w-40 in 5 gal pails".
Being a non-believer (figured it's really "LE" - as they had cases of one-gallon LE
stacked on the floor) - had him trot out a 5 gal pail. .

Sure enough - *Not* LE. Looked for any CJ-4 listing, clean on that one too.

According to this parts guy - the Delo 400 CI-4 Plus was not available for quite
awhile - then just re-appeared in the system.
Maybe he's right - or, maybe it's just old stock. (Said he had 7 more 5 gal pails).

Maybe the "serious" oil users - fleets, etc. - *****ed about the CJ-4
due to more frequent oil change intervals and/or their oil analysis results ??

So - keep after it!
Check the specs.
If it says CJ-4 - no bueno!
(*UNLESS* you have a '07 or newer truck -
then some regular oil analysis is in order to determine your change intervals).
