Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) No more lift pump troubles for me!

Courierdog, it is true that I don't drive my truck every day, but all my vehicles look the same. It doesn't take much to keep them clean once they are clean. I drive in snow and dirt but just spend time to clean it after. My truck is nothing compared to some of those guys at May Madness in the Show n Shine contest. I learned a trick there this year. They spray down the underside with WD-40 and wipe it off, leaving a film that resists dirt and cleans back to the black. I think I'll try that.



Stan, I have been running the stock/backup pump about once a month for a day really just to verify that it is alive and well. It is full of fuel and sitting there just like if it were the only pump in the system and I don't know if idle time would really have any negative effect on it. I would feel a little silly though if I needed it and it didn't work!



Phil, interesting note on the ability to pull fuel through the FASS. I rely on my gauge to see if everything is okay. If the FASS failed the VP maight pull fuel anyway but I suppose the pressure would become a suction and not show on the gauge as a positive pressure.

I'd like to talk more but I'm in a conference call and typing this is distracting me from trying to shave and drive at the same time!

cool thx for pics, is the metal line 3/8, or 9/16, mine is 2001, also did you have to flare metal line and was the harness that comes with pump, im thinking FASS DDRP long enough, or did you modify the wires?

Eric, I beleive the line is 3/8" but I would have to check to be sure about that. Actually the first connection I made was a flare fitting at the line that comes from the tank but it is stainless I think and was very difficult to flare so I went with the steel compression fittings. If you get good steel hydraulic fittings they don't leak. I cut the line with an almost empty tank only because I had read that it could siphon and I didn't want the mess or to have to try to blow into the line to stop it. The harness is plenty long to reach the tank area, in fact it is long enough to go to the front of the rear wheel which is where FASS says to install your pump. You should have no problems with that but I did shorten a few areas to eliminate coiling wire, just make sure to solder and shrinkwrap everything good.

Stan, I got a few at OSH, the standard ones, but if you really want the good steel compression fittings or odd sized metric stuff I got them at Royal Brass on North 10th in San Jose. Any hydraulic supply should have the parts. I layed everything out first and made a list of the fittings I needed and where they went but still made a few trips down there to get things after something changed. If you have a PepBoys nearby they also have a good selection of the usual brass fittings and are very reasonable in price.
