Adventures with a sound meter

EPA is out for diesels again...

You can no longer order a Ford truck with a PowerStroke International engine. Ford will no longer let you order a truck with a PowerSmoke Diesel. You have to wait for the new diesel to be released to get your new truck. (kind of sounds like DC cutting back on the RAMS until the new ones come out) Have you guys herd anything else about the new motor? I'm kind of currious because my brotherinlaw is thinking of buying a Exkurstion.

I read somewhere that the new ford engine was going to be a V8, downsized to about 350 CI, (I guess they want to level the playing field) factory bombed to over 200 hp, they figure if cummins can do it with 360 CI so can they, can't wait to see this-Bob

Ya know what Ford says, "There's no replacement for displacement":-laf :-laf

Why aren't they going to start using the CTD?

All we keep hearing from the Ford guys is how they still "own Cummins". ;)

Remember the old Ford ads... . "Ford's got a better idea"?

Too bad they can't come up with a diesel engine as good as their truck.

HEY DODGE..... 4 REAL doors... ... HELLOOOOOOOOOO, are you listening?!

:-{} #@$%!

I was at my Cummins dealer today and the service manager asked if I had heard that the 7. 3 powerstroke wouldn't pass the new emisions requirements? He heard through the grape vine they were going to a smaller 6 cylinder, a little over 400 cid.

Just passing on a rumor!

Latest issue of TDR has an article about this. Don't have it in front of me but I did glance over it the other night. Ford has a V6 version to go into the F150. There was also an article about Cummins doing some research with small V's. They are realizing there is a market out there (small trucks and suv's) to be tapped if they can get the price right.

A light duty diesel for the daily running and a FL70 for pulling my "girls" around would suit me just fine.

The new 6. 0L PSD in the 2500 and up sized trucks is going to be an iron block AND head V8, no two ways about it. It will be substantially lighter than the 7. 3, but the weight savings is NOT aluminum heads. It is going to be around 325HP and 600 Ft/Lbs, they will have the most powerfull diesel on the market for at least one year. It is very much like the current PSD, but smaller and more effiecient. Ford has not released final power ratings, but rest assured that the title is theirs. The title is the driving force behind the introduction of the new engine not emissions.

There will also be in mid year '03 a V6 PSD, about 5. 2 liter that will appear first in the expedition and then the F150 line. It is supposed to be around 240HP and 420 Ft/Lbs. The V6 is still in testing right now so final numbers for power are not to be had.

Cummins is best, la la la, yada yada yada, Mother Cummins makes the world go around, bla bla bla. I agree that the Cummins is a better engine, but wanted to save those that would point it out the typing:rolleyes: ;) .

My source

says the new engine will debut this quarter, have 250 HP and 525 torque, with 6 liters displacement. The problem at Cornbinder is the emission standards, and the flowerpoke can't cut it. In fact, they have to undergo another major upgrade in 2003/4 to meet those emissions. Funny how they continue to re-invent the wheel, when all they have to do is buy a Cummins! Cummins 2003 Dodge engine is certified to 2006 EPA crap, and will have 250 HP, 525 torque, and 305 HP, 555 torque in 2003 models.

Ford screwed up. . they sold what they owned of Cummins and went to bed w/Navistar. They should have gone to Cat or the like and gone w/a simpler I6 config.

The ONLY reason Ford and Chevy are using V-8 diesels is MARKETING. Unless they have a name like Cummins/Cat/Deere on it, they couldn't give away any I-6 they designed in-house. The average truck buyer over the years has been brainwashed into the notion that to upgrade power, you gotta get a V-8. Not true of diesels, and of course, anyone who's been exposed to farm, construction or big truck diesels knows this is not true, an I-6 is the standard, and will make equal or better power per CI, have less parts, easier to maintain, etc.

 I enjoy reading about the new offerings from different companies. There really shouldn't be any mudslinging coming from us consumers. Sure, I love my Cummins and will argue with a grin of why I think it's best. But when it comes down to it, we the consumers benefit from the corporations trying to out-do eachother.

Whether it be Dodge, Ford or Chevy, keep them coming!Oo.

the ford engineer said this

I work at a ford dealer ship, in the body shop. The service manager was talking to the ford engenner the other day at work and he said that the new phord is going to be a 6. 0 liter and is going to be quit as a gas engine. He also said that it is going to have a two stage turbo one for low end and one for high end. This was coming from a engenner from ford, they call this guy when no body else can fix them. But I say the noise is all about having a diesel duaaa. Justin :D

The new 6. 0 litre motor will have 305 HP.

Sounds good? That's 305HP at 3,600RPM whew,, spinnin' like a gasser.

But the torque is okay,, 550 pounds @ 2,000RPM, and ~500 pounds at 1,500RPM

I still like the grunt of my Cummins,, I can shift at 2,900-3,000RPM and still blow away gassers and POSD's and D-Max's.
