I know that aftermarket filters flow better, but if my filter minder pulled down before the cold air intake and not after (with the same filter in place), wouldn't that indicate that the box itself is to blame, at least partially?

The other thing I wish I did was gauges first (I know, I know! :-laf ) so I could see some of the other things that happen re: boost and egt's. I guess it won't be too hard to get gauges, go back to stock, make some notes, then put the goodies back on.

In my case the filter box was the restriction. 05 totally stock. The first time it sucked down was after a trip to baja. Put in new filter but it still would suck down about 30% on the filterminder. A couple of 2" holes put through the box and a full throttle run, no more suck downs. So first change your filter, because the paper filters so much better than the high flow gauze and other after market performance filters that in as little as 5-7thousand miles it can start to become a restriction. On a totally stock truck you gain nothing and waste alot of money using aftermarket filters and boxes which according to all the dyno pulls I've seen don't start helping performance until the 2600-3000 rpm range.

Dang Mink... I like your ingenuity. I have some drain pipe sitting outside the house, and an extra airbox waiting for something like this.

Then, when you drop in a Nanofiber air filter, as was shown in a review done in the most recent TDR magazine, you find that the filter is no longer the restriction point because the Nano flows so well.

Chuck,

Which filters are considered Nanofiber? I have been debating changing the stock air box to complement my Edge Juice, but after reading through several posts here I think all I really need is a filter. The problem is I am worried that higher flow = less filtration.

Kenney,

Here is a direct link to the Amsoil build list so you can see the filters available for your make and model: http://www.amsoil.com/scripts/runisa.dll?amsoiloaf:index . I'm not a die hard Amsoil fan by any stretch of the imagination, but the Ea series is one helluva air filter. Great flow w/o sacrificing filtration. I just recently put one on my truck and my filter minder is no longer being sucked down. Good luck.

Nanofiber filters are designed for extreme dusty environments. They flow better than paper and oiled elements, require no wet washing, no oiling, and filter better than paper filters.

Let me know if you'd live more info!

Amink, I Did The Same Mod To My Air Box In 04 , I Just Ran A 4" Pcp Pipe From The Bottom Of The Air Box Down , Do You Think This Setup Flows Just As Much As Anybodys Big $$$ Air Cleaner Setup ? Everyone Keeps Saying I Should Change My Air Cleaner But It Never Pulls Down And With The Nano Fiber Amsoil Filter And A Stock Box With A 4" Hole Mod Done To It I Would Think It Would Flow Just As Good As Anyones , Your Thoughts ? Or Does Anyone Have Proof To Prove Me Wrong ?

SELLUFISHMAN-

I really don't know if it flows more than the high dollar setups. I do know that with even the stock filter with over 10,000 on it, it doesn't suck down on the minder anymore. As I mentioned, I didn't gauge before I did the mod, so I don't even know how EGT's are effected. It does sound better, though! But remember, I also took off the stock hose and put on a Cool Tube.

PSM air box mod

I know you guys like to build things yourself but for those of you without the time to build your own stock airbox mod we have a complete kit already put together. The stock airbox is a nice sealed unit and with the PSM cold air intake mod, an Amsoil nanofiber filter, a Cool Hose and maybe a TAG you've got an awesome set-up. Especially for the guys who tow. The guy who puts these together for us claims they flow enough air for up to 425rwhp. I'll take the cold air anyday over something pulling in hot, under-hood heat! Plus they are much less expensive. Yes, for now you do have to call to order.
