Interesting that the 3g makes a lot of noise w/o the muffler. I had no muffler on my 96 and liked the minor increase in sound. Seems like most don't like no muffler on the 3g?

For me it's just that at a certain RPM range, around 2300, it makes a loud vibrating noise that resonates through the cab badly.

My race bullet is on the way so hopefully that will fix the noise.

I finally found a straight through muffler that is a direct replacement for the 04 stock muffler. Brand name is FULLBOAR.

The overall length is 36", It is 3½" input and output. PART# is SD817

They have a website fullboarexhaust.com

This is a BIG muffler, about 9" dia.

I briefly had a straight pipe on my 2003 and it sounded terrible! I then put on a Rip Rooks 4" exhaust system with the straight through muffler. It sounds better, but still not as good as a straight piped 12 valver. I have heard some good sounding 24 valve 1998. 5-2002 trucks. Is it the new fuel system that makes the difference? I sure would love to have a 4" straight pipe system and eventually plan a dual stack/flatbed conversion, but I want it to sound as good as my 1996!

the ez changes the sound of the truck in that you get through the rpm range much faster which does indeed have a much better sound. the pilot injection is what is messing with the sound. i cant wait for variable vane turbo that is when i will sell this trck:)

i tried to remove my muffler before the snow hit the ground but it proved to be stubborn. the factory tightened them clamps up real good crimping the pipe enough that i could not get it out without cutting so i gave up on it for now... the muffler won that round, but when the nice weather comes around again, it will loose... and will be disemboweled :-laf :-laf

NICKleinonen, Where the clamps were, did you try to heat the crimped areas with a torch? If you heat it up till it glows, then you can wiggle the pipe and it will come off, me thinks;)

No, nick leinonen, is right about the crimps. I had to split the outer tube before getting the muffler out. After the muffler was gutted, I had to weld the slits back up in order to re-clamp the system.

It's easy if you have the equipment, PIA I'm sure if you don't.

This is only a guess because I have nothing to compare against. But, I'm thinking that a hollow chamber the size of a 55 gallon drum sounds different than a straight through pipe. It sounds pretty throaty to me, not as load as the older trucks, but definitely diesel.
