No oil in filter at oil change?

That does a much better job of showing it that the 05 SM. Looking at the 05 and that pic I can tell they are in the same spot.
 
I tried a little experiment today. When I changed my oil the other day the oil in my filter was lower than it normally is.



I hadn't run the truck since running it after the oil change to check for leaks.



Before starting the truck, I removed the oil filter and it was about half full. Exactly how my 2nd Gen truck was when I changed oil. When I had it really hot the other day it probably siphoned out a little more with the thinner oil. I usually run the truck until the temp gauge hits 140 to change oil.



I remember a number of years ago (before 3rd Gen) there was an article in the TDR magazine that said not to be concerned with the half full filter, the Cummins siphoned some out after shut down. I don't believe the lube system has changed much since the 2nd Gen so I think this is normal. My filter has never been full since my '05 was new either, just that the last time it was less full.



I put the filter back, started the truck and ran it for a couple of minutes and then took off the filter and as expected, it was overflowing and I made a mess.



I also timed how long it took to build oil pressure from a cold start. Mine took less than 4 seconds to bring the gauge up to normal and the "no oil sound" was gone.

I may have missed it, but is that on the OEM gauge or an aftermarket one?
 
The OEM gauge is fake and means nothing for oil pressure for the first 30 seconds after engine start, then it only means you have a min of 6 psi. There is no psi transducer on the block, just a 6 psi switch.

I know that but the original poster has quite a few posts where he describes his oil pressure problems and at the time (before he installed a "real" gauge) his OEM Gauge stayed at zero and the engine clatter didn't go away.
 
Typically if there is a no oil psi at startup condition the gauge will read "normal" for 30 seconds, and then drop to 0 with a check gauges.

The OEM gauge will register pressure at the same time every time.

This is true, the OEM gauge does read normal at startup even when there is a no pressure condition, until the 30 sec (give or take) time has lapsed and the check gauges light comes on. Even during that time period when the gauge would read normal before it dropped off, the engine would chatter indicating the absence of pressure. There was a very significant audible difference when the pressure did build, it was like the cummins saying "Ahhhhhh" This is the reason I installed the aftermarket gauge, to see what the true reading was. Then of course it didnt want to show its face again!
 
DogramTD, I guess I should have read your oil pressure posts more carefully. I did remember that your clatter didn't go away, forgot that your gauge read normal. :eek:



The main reason I was checking mine was to see if oil was flowing into the filter and that the bypass wasn't stuck open. I'm satisfied that all is OK in that department.



As an afterthought I mentioned oil pressure. Fake gauge aside, my clatter goes away in less than 4 seconds so I know I'm getting oil pressure and flow, just not how much pressure.

Until of course after I posted the above then went out to start my truck after 4 days. Did it again, this time I counted the secs as I watched the gauge, when I got to 30 I shut the truck down and restarted it; op built quickly at that point.



Still wonder what it may be... so hesitant on buying a new oil cooler; I guess I just need to for $80. Just looking for a sign from above or something!
 
I don't understand what the oil cooler would have to do with it. The cooler contains the filter bypass valve and if it was stuck in either position it shouldn't have any noticable effect on oil pressure.



The pressure relief valve which you can remove and check from the top could stick open though. That would cause low oil pressure for sure.



The valve could be sticky when cold, the cold oil under initial high pressure opens it and then it sticks there. If it were my truck I would change the plunger and spring.

I am not concerned about the bypass, only the PRV. For $80, its worth the piece of mind knowing there are 2 newly machined surfaces that are better matched rather than replacing a part of it... kinda like replacing piston/rings w/o honing or boring a cylinder.

I agree with this, unless you're really on a shoestring.

I received my oil analysis back... everything was good execept higher than avg iron indicating excessive wear. I just came back from a 4 day/2600 mile trip empty load going out 80 mph/2200rpm and a very light 1500# load coming back @ 75mph/2000 rpm; no excessive idling or heavy loads otherwise.
