it just started doing this, but dosent do it all the time. i put it in neutral and it comes back. could it be my sender? has any one else had this happen?

I suspect the sending unit. Do a search on oil pressure sending units and you will get some info. If you really want to know what is going on hook up a direct oil pressure guage. I dont know off hand how to do it but there are plenty of people on this website that can tell you how. Joe George jump in here please. :-laf

Get a 1/8" NPT T fitting so you can look at the stock gauge at the same time as the mechanical one. I used a grease gun hose to move my stock sending unit and the sending unit away from the engine. I installed a marine alarm in the T fitting with the stock sending unit on the other branch. At one time I removed the alarm and rigged a tube to a mechanical gauge in it's place to check out my stock sending unit and gauge. They were ok. Be aware that with a mechanical guage you will see a start up spike that can get as high as 80 PSI for short period. The stock gauge does not show that spike. It's normal and no problem.

I have a 98 and mine was doing this in the very hot weather at stops.

I changed the sender while doing my lift pump. I havent had any real chance to test it (hasnt been that hot-not driving it very much latley) but it appears better.

I'll have the TT out this weekend, and it's supposed to be close to 90 on Sat. so maybe that will be a good test.

Bought my truck with no oil pressure. I drove it for 5 months before the Sender started to leak.

Bumps, shakes, bridges, My big @$$ shifting from side to side, anything that disturbed it would cause it to either kick in or die. It always showed 40psi when it did work though. You'll need a sending unit socket to install the new one.
