Is this normal? #ad

Maybe it just the way the sending unit is set-up. Alls I know is that it bugs me. Never had a vehicle take so long to register oil pressure. Any feed back would help me know if I should be concerned or be relieved because it is normal.

<font color=blue>3 to 4 seconds for oil pressure to register is how mine works. And I have been told by the members here at the TDR that it is perfectly normal.

It's normal. The reasoning I've been told is because the pressure you see is actually averaged over a few seconds -- so you don't see the pressure until it has enough data to calculate the average.

Mine does it too. I just wait a few seconds to see oil pressure before driving off.

Yup, just like everyone else, it appears to be normal or what we call WAD (Working As Designed) It bugs me too. It really bugs me when I see people starting up their trucks or cars and before the engine is even at RPM, they are already in gear driving off. People have no patience.

Hi Big Bob,
Try this. Before you do a cold start, roll the window down or leave the door open. Then hit the starter. Engine starts. Listen to the engine closely. You can hear when oil pressure comes up. Engine noise decreases. Mine takes about 1 second. Gauge takes longer to register.

That seems normal, my pressure doesn't come up until all the check lights have gone out for the second time.

BYW didn't I see you had a PE coming... If you need help testing it I'll be glad to cross the state line... #ad

Come on over, I'm sure that after it gets here (this week hopefully) I will be doing alot of testing. Come over and help me give everyone at TDR an accurate report on its performance. I'm also in Spokane 2 to 3 day a week. Let's get together and find some PSD to BLOW away!! #ad

Big Bob

Let me know when your around I can usually get away any time and I'll meet you somewhere for coffee or a new truck or some parts..... #ad

When taking private pilot's lessons, the first thing you're trained to do after starting the engine is to look over at the oil pressure gauge and not do ANYTHING until you're up to safe pressure.

I always assumed that my Cummins didn't HAVE any oil pressure until the pump had a chance to come up to speed and pressurize. I don't think the gauge is lying, and I don't think it's an issue of averaging input. Until the motor has been running for a second or two, you simply don't have any pressure to report!

FWIW - I idle my truck for 10-15 second before pulling off anyway. I have a habit of always looking over the oil pressure and voltmeter before taking off - good habits for a lifetime of happy motoring. #ad

According to trusted and knowledgeable people at my dealer, you most certainly do have almost instant oil pressure after startup. The delay in the guage is controlled by the body module. The delay is neccessary because the initial startup pressure is higher than the guage can read. The slow rise in pressure reading is a result of a time delay R/C in the circuit which dampens needle bounce. This high pressure also showed up in early 24 valves as burst oil filters. The delay is normal, but it sure scared me the first time I started my truck!
