Hey guy's wondering if anyone has run across this problem,my truck will not shift into overdrive and the tach needle just bounces between 3and 4 thousand rpm even though I'm only doing around 1300 rpm. sometimes after a bump it will settle down for a minute and work right for 1/2 mile or so then goes back to the erratic tach and shifting out of overdrive. I've set the tps at . 9 and it moves smoothly to around 3. 6 v,i cleaned the grounds and the vss is only six months old and all connections on it are clean . I'm leaning towards the crankshaft sensor because it seems rpm related. I just wanted to see if anyone else has had a similar problem.

Check the plug going to the crank sensor by the #1 valve cover. It could be a loose connection/corrision.

Also check the air gap on the sensor.

often what happens is the belt tensioner wears causing the belt to trak in towards the engine... If the belt jumps off it will cut the wires on the crank sensor.....

There is a bit about the crank position sensor (cps) in TDR 51 (latest issue)…just in case anyone wanted to know :)
