Thermostat Question

Dual Exhaust for First Gen??

Fri. I spent 7 hrs walking through the huge Fall Jefferson swap meet an did not find one part for our 1st Gens. whenever I saw a custom exh, turbo, chip, trans, etc, they were for Duramax or powerstroke. Guess it shows those owners need to spend big $$ to get the power we get for free. :-laf

Did see a show condition non original color 1st gen entering the swap with older gent at the wheel. Heard the getrag moaning as he rolled by. Behind the cab was a good size PROPANE tank ? Color matched to truck. Didn't sound or look like a tire burner. Would of liked to talk with the owner. See if he is a TDR member ?

The parts are out there, you just have to look in specific places.

Ford, GM and Dodge will sell hundreds of thousands of new 2007, 2008 PowerStroke, Duramax and Cummins trucks this year.

None will be B5. 9 First Gen Dodges. Thats why aftermarket parts are not aimed at First Gens.

Nobody is going to spend millions on marketing, development and advertising for a truck that is far and few between not to mention the fact that few of the remaining first gens out there have owners who really want to spend alot on power mods.

news flash, those new truck owners have the power that you have to try to get for free... if they spend 'big money', they're wiping the road w/ an old square body dodge.

don't get me wrong, I love the old square bodies, but I've also owned/driven one and the free power that's on tap really isn't all that much.

can one get 300rwhp out of a 1st gen w/ only pump tweaks? (serious question)

You can get close if everything is perfect but are pushing the envelope on parts longevity.

The pieces avialable for 1st gen upgrades are not readily packable as plug-n-play. Way too much work and technicalities for the average truck owner to understand let alone attempt. :-laf

The newer trucks are dead easy to upgrade and make them go BOOM. Anybody with enough $$$ can destroy one in an afternoon with off the shelf products. That way the Big 3 sell more trucks to buy more parts for. :)

As usual there is a disconnect between what I was thinking, an what I typed.

I didn't mean to imply a 1st gen can equal a new truck power wise for free.

Being a low buck do it yourself kinda guy, I like the idea of taking a $5000. more or less truck, some TDR info, and getting % wise a lot of improvement out of a 160 hp CTD for little bucks.

Contrast this with those who spend $35k to $50k or so for a truck, then spend thousands more in bolt ons to get that something extra satisfaction.

Different strokes for diff folks, but I prefer that kind of $$ in something that increases in value.

hey jeremy, hows your truck runnin?

i remember logging onto this site for the first time about two years ago and remember how cool it was when you posted those numbers!

do you still dyno your truck every now and then?

don

Yeah well I like to embarrass all age groups I don’t discriminate. :-laf

Oh by the way Forrest the exhaust housing that you sold me is still doing fine.

Stomp

glad to hear it! :D

I've been having visions lately of a square body single cab 2wd auto w/ a 215 engine, some big sticks and some big hooters... I've got the 215 engine and a 3. 54 D80... catching myself shopping for 1st gens lately :-laf

One of the reasons our first gen trucks are so dependable is that they are not being asked to deliver a great deal in terms of performance. Think industrial duty when you look at our engines.

One came into our local dealership the other day with over 750,000 on the odometer. The owner was since new and said he hadn't touched anything but starters, alternators, a couple of transmission rebuilds, and the usual consumables. How many 3 gen's do you think will survive to 750,000 miles. Very few if any I think.

an 03 Quad/long 2wd auto came into Hot Rod Diesel the other day with 569k on it. the ORIGINAL transmission was starting to hang in gear! 1 owner, typical maint items.

I like 1st gen bodies but I like 2nd gen 12v engine so I am mixing the two. This gives me the best of both worlds. Shadrach

unless you are sled pulling or want to have someone make you some 14" springs for a street 4x4 i am gonna guess that a 2nd gen rides about 7 times better than a first gen and prolly produces a little less engine noise in the cab too. ,. .

of course you could spend 10k and 4-link it with some plush air bags but it is still an old work truck that is gonna rattle apart some day

you know what i mean... your old lady grabs the door handle and pulls on it to close the door but instead of the door closing she rips the rubbastic handle off the door

stuff like that...

i still think the best bet is low mile 2nd gen if you dont want a puter controlling your injection

and i dont...

I know that I'm going to enjoy every minute I can of my 92... She's only got 170,000 on her, so unless something really bad happens "ie" wreck I'm looking forward to years of good times and memories with it and my kids... I just got it in May and have done what in my sig with it to make it run better and it is doing a lot better. I'm going to get DDP 80 HP injectors, a Garret Turbo, DTT TQ converter and flex plate, in all around 3 grand to set it up the way I want to. I think as long as we have fun with what we're doing, it doesn't matter what gen truck we have. I have my 04 for the over the road trips or kicking the crap out of a powerjoke or maxipad and my 92 to go out and play with... Oh and I know ya'll will be intrested in this, I'm going to Speed line the "WHOLE" truck with Speedliner bedliner...

The "new" trucks:

For $54,600 you are getting (on average after several dyno runs) 474 Lbs Ft and 269 HP @ the rear wheels.

One has to decide if that is the truck for one. I'll refrain from adding my personal opinion.
