My truck started running bad on the way back from the dunes sunday . We stopped to use the restroom went to start up the truck it would run untill you put it in gear then die . So i feathered the pedal and got it to stay running but no power and tons of black smoke . opened the hood and found wire unplugged right above fuel filter and a wire unplugged on the end of the injection pump plugged them in ran good 5 miles from home stopped at corner and had same problem made sure wires are hooked up not sure what the problem is or what each of these wires are . Also when the truck is running if i take of the fill cap you can hear like a loose gear sound you know a rattle  not to loud but i dont like it . Any info Thanks

Need to change my sig 89 d 350 auto

The wires are for the cold start advance. If it's disconnected, it will go to full advance, in your case.

Internal pump pressure is adjusted by the timing advance.

The gear noise you hear when you remove the filler cap is normal. You'd be surpriseed how a little metal can insulate against noises of that nature.

The black smoke sounds like a pump or injector issue to me, esp when combined with the lack of power. Might start by checking your lift pump pressure, and checking for any leaks, esp in the return system. Also a good idea to check your supply hose for signs of rotting, splitting, stiffening, etc.

I will check it out thanks guys . i hope the pump is not bad it was just weird i plugged the wire in and restarted it and it ran better . i was just hopin it was just a wire

Yes/no.

When you did so, how/where and when did you check it? If the guage you used is a 60 psi unit and you check it at the supply line for the injection pump (after the fuel filter) and did so at WOT ,then you may need to adjust your method to acquire accuracy.

I did it pre filter at the first banjo going into the filter housing with a digital gauge . I went wot and it never moved not sure what is low for these pumps from what i could gather in this forum seems a little low but not for sure . At this pressure will it burn up my VE-44 ? Thanks

Pretty tough to burn one up. They generally begin to act funny and then you investigate. They have a vane supply pump that is coupled to the drive shaft (of said pump) and it will pull fuel in.

It would seem, if you are certain the gauge is accurate, it's a bit low. Generally you would see 3to4 psi under a load at WOT. In your circumstance, you should be about 6 to 7 psi.

Drive it and report back what it drops to under a load.

Check pressure at wot 3-4 psi this truck is blowing white -black smoke like crazy untill the rpm gets up and then it starts to clear out . It has no power off the line but as the rpm get up it starts to run pretty good . If i run it manual in the gears it will run good and clear up in all the gears but if it auto shifts it only clears up in 3rd when the rpm gets up about 60-70 mph

black smoke + no power is USUALLY indicative of a boost leak... check the obvious (boots) first. if you don't find anything, I would make a pressurization fitting using a PVC rubber end cap and a shrader valve. clamp it over the intake side of the turbo and feed it about 20-30psi of regulated air and start looking/listening for leaks.

Not sure how well it applies but I just checked my fuel pressure at the injector pump. It was 5 psi at idle when cold and 15 psi at idle when warm and 22 psi at WOT when warm.

Found a small boost leak fixed and still same problem . I let the truck idle and hit all the turbo coonections with soapy water . Well i got some on the head and noticed the 2 and 4 inj bubbling at the copper washer . The 4 was really bad . What does this mean ?

Your truck has no boost at idle... so checking the intake plumbing like that won't tell you much.

Sounds like you need new copper washers. You could try tightening them first.

Don't know what the torque spec is, but I'm sure someone here has that info at hand.

44 lb ft. Jay didn't torque HIS :p

It simply means the copper is leaking compression. Not detremental, but you otta do something some time.

You need to make a plumbers cap boost test tool. Fastens direct to the turbo intake.

Check your fuel filter. If it is impacted with something it won't let enough fuel through. Happened to a buddy of mine on his second gen. All kinds of smoke, black/white, no power. He had gotten a bad tank of gas and the "sand" substance plugged his fuel filter. Replaced the filter and truck was fine.

That was an honest mistake. My bus drivers still call it gas. "need to come in a get GAS", they'll say. I tell 'em I "ain't got any GAS here"

I like to rip 'em on that once in a while. :-laf
