My '95 has about 6 psi boost, 13 mpg, and is a dog. It doesn't smoke, and it still has a cat. I tried clamping off the vacuum line that goes to the wastegate and got 2 more psi. What is wrong? It has 73k miles. My old 91 was twice as fast and got 20 mpg. Help!

As long as you have no filter restrictions, leaking inner cooler, disconnected or lose intake hoses it would have to be that the wastegate actuator is not closeing all the way. Sometimes the diaphragm in them goes out and the actuator has to be replaced, other times it just gets carboned up and needs to be worked back and forth so it can close fully.
Also check that the turbo spins freely by hand. 4-6 psi is what my '95s run at no load on flat highway speeds, but if I hit a hill or stomp on the throttle I can get it to 20+ psi easily, but I have mods.

You need to check all your clamps & hoses from the Turbo to intercooler to intake as they are loose somewhere causing loss of boost.

Just my two cents but sounds like a stopped up converter, "if the exhaust can't flow the boost won't go " (or the truck) Also I can't think of a reason to leave it on

Look at the line going from the intake manifold to the AFC housing on top of the pump. Sounds like the line is broken or cracked and you aren't getting extra fuel as boost is added.

Tell us what you find out,
Chris

Lose the cat, quick!! Then check air filter and intercooler hose clamps. If clean and all tight, make sure that your fuel filter and the screen in the fuel heater are clean. If they're both clean, check that the spring in the P-7100 injector pump fuel return valve is still providing good resistance. If it's flattened out, more fuel will be returned to the tank than goes to the injectors. All of the above presume that this wasn't a sudden performance flat-line. If it was, maybe you bought some dirty diesel. Otherwise "Fuel + Air = Power", as a wise philosopher once said. You need to make sure that you're getting plenty of both to your engine; but I still suspect a clogged cat.

Thanks guys, my cat was plugged. I replaced it with $40 worth of pipe, reducers and clamps from NAPA. Went from 5 to 15 psi. Feels like a different truck. Next up- Valve adjustment.
