What am I doing wrong here?

I have the stock 96 vacuum pump and power steering pump going to the stock 72 chevy steering gear box. I add the fluid and turn lock to lock without the truck running getting fluid to right level. I start the truck and the fluid level goes down, so I add to bring back up to level. The problem is that the steering wheel gets really hard to turn once the truck is started and if it runs for five minutes or I try to force the steering wheel, it will blow the steering gear seal at the top where all the steering linkage connects. I am frustrated as I cannot figure it out.

Thanks for all/any help you can provide.

I was wondering about the crossed lines. It has been six years since I did the conversion and this is the first time I have bothered to look at the power steering since I tried six years ago. I was having too much fun driving it. I would like to think I did not do that, but I probably did. I will put a new o'ring in and try to reverse the lines next week. The lines are a different size from each other so I will have to re-flare them with new fittings.

Thanks

Thanks DVolk,

I did have the lines crossed. In the end it cost me three hours and 20 bucks to fix my mistake. It is like a whole new truck as I forgot how easy it could be to turn 35" super swampers.

Your welcome !!!!!!!!!!!!! Do you have the drop link or cross over steering ? on my burb i got the drop S link would like to to get mine more centerd but i might just take it to the tire shop . I need to decide on mine if my lines are leaking and not the pump of which would suck big time !!!!! but i gues oil is cheaper than parts for now .

I have the crossover steering. My steering wheel is after market and I can adjust it to center it as long as the steering box is centered with the drag link. My drag link only drops an inch or so.

I found out when I re-did my lines that I could use some practice flaring them. It was tough to make the cut and find a good unbent section of line to put the reflare tools on as well.
