no power to ground

last night i was making a u-turn when all of the sudden i noticed that i was freewheeling, even though i hadn't taken my foot off the gas. My engine is running just fine. but when i go to put the truck into gear i don't feel it engage, the is true for reverse, drive, and both manual lows, The truck just never gets up into the brake like it wants to go and then even applying throttle, nothing. Any ideas?

Any chance the transfer case dropped into neutral?

Possibly but if so it would've had to have done it under the truck because the shifter is in two high. When I go into 4 high or neutral with the shifter it indicates on the dash that it's in 4 wheel drive but I still get No response when putting it into gear. As in No load on the engine.

If its not the t case I would have to say output shaft of transmission. Or maybe the input. . I snapped the input shaft on my 48re and I wasn't even driving hard at the time

I've got a billet input shaft( not that it matters from what I'm beginning to find out) and I was not driving hard and was running empty. Any way to check either one without pulling the transmission?

If the engine runs and it's not the transfercase, you might as well pull the transmission, unless there is some electronic gizmo that could give your symptoms.

If park does not hold the truck in place likely output shaft or T-case.



If park works then it is TC, input shaft or soemthing else internally. Nee dto check pressures to see if anything loooks weird.

The truck seems to hold itself in park. I'm parked on flat ground tho so not certain. Going to run pressure tests in a little bit.

The truck holds itself in park, and pressure tested the drive port and pressure was good (about 80psi. )

Well that really sucks.



The pump is good and its making pressure. Park is holding so t-case and output shaft are good.



Do you feel anything at all trying to engage when you put it in gear?



Maybe broke the shift lever shaft and control valve is not moving. Input shaft broke or stator broke in the TC. If the stator doesn't work right it goes no where.



Sorry for your luck there but looks like the trans has to come out again.

I was mistaken. once i got it out of the grass it does NOT hold park at all. So is there anything i can do at this point to narrow it down any further.

I think the output shaft speed sensor is towards the back. If you pulled it and put it on jacks and looked thru the hole you might be able to see if the shaft is turning.



It has to be the output shaft or tcase if park does not hold.

OK. So I pulled the transfer case and it's working fine. Started the truck, put it in gear, output shaft didn't move. Then after sitting in gear for a min, the output shaft very very slowly made about one rotation. There's also a very slight unusual "off balance" sound coming from the bell housing.

I had the screens in the transmission plug up with crap. Truck would not move.

Are you talking about the filter? If not, where are these screens and how does one go about cleaning them?

No screens, just a filter. Its really not much more than a rock screen anyway.



At the point these filters plug and quit drawing fluid the transmission is done.



The description of the output shaft turning a 1/2 turn really sounds like an input shaft snapped.

Snapped input? coasting thru a u-turn? a billet input on top of that? this trans, torque converter and input shaft have less than 15k miles on them and i have gone easier on this trans which is supposed to be completely built, (billet input, triple disc tc, upgraded valve body, redline clutches, etc etc etc, the only thing i didn't get was the billet output shaft. )

Could be any other number of things internally and not the input.
