Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) barring tool?

When I start up I have been blowing smoke with a little engine sputtering. Then that will clear up, but I will have no engine power. I can floor the accelerator, but engine will not rev, will have very little rpm, and no power. Eventually the power will slowly start to build, but it takes about five minutes or more. The transmission will shift smoothly when it gets to the right speed, it just takes a while. Finally the power will just kick in and the engine will work properly. This only happens during the first start of the day, after that it seems to work fine.

If it matters, I recently had an exhaust manifold replaced. Before that I did use injector cleaner, so hopefully they are fine.

I travel full time, and am normally only in an area for a week. Most repair shops seem to be scheduling about a week out, so it would be a help to me to have an idea where my problem is coming from so that I may set up some kind of repair. Anyone have an idea?

Try the simple stuff first. Cycle the key on-off three times without starting to check for codes. I would then try to recalibrate the TPS by disconnecting the batteries for a couple of hrs with the key switched on. Then reconnect the batts. and slowly push the go pedal to the floor a couple of times.

These are free and they may help do a little troubleshooting before throwing a few parts at her.

Yep, a bunch of codes came up:

P PCU - P0622, P1765, P1693

P ECU - P0217, P1693, P0216

Tomorrow I will try the next step of recalibrating the TPS.

Thanks for the advice.

Welcome to the site, you can view the codes in the "911" forum. The one that stands out is the 216. VP44 failure. With the other codes it might be ECM. One can only hope. Are you over 100k in mileage? Mike

Mine did this every morning until it warmed up. It would only run 35 mph for about a mile then it would kick in and run well all day. I tried everything else but it was the VP-44.

Thanks everyone for your help. I am presently at 92,000 miles. I will look into the fuel pump.

I also noticed one of the codes was for decreased engine performance due to overheating. Is this telling me of a one time problem or is this a continuing error?

Dan

If it's any consolation for you, several months ago I changed the ECM in mine with Marco's trying to eliminate a electrical gremlen. My VP-44 took a dump a mile from the house on the test drive afterwards forcing me to walk home.

Man, it was good the . 44 was not in the truck that day.

sounds like its your ECm Not your Vp44 ... . I got like 25 codes when my ecm died ,,,,and the temp gauge keep pegging and causing it to defuel ,,, watch your engine temp gauge if its pegging out its your ecm contact bob wagner . if its not defueling dure to engine temp via false ECm reading then its most likly dead pedal associated with vp44 issues.

ECM About $800

VP About $1200

Bad news either way . .

Good Luck
