To racingfanscjww,

Use the switch carefully, I don't like to have it locked when the truck decides to switch in or out of OD. It is like shifting gears in a manual transmission without using the clutch.

I do use the switch to unlock under certain conditions. If I'm climbing a short grade and the egt is getting too high, I'll unlock to allow rpm to rise. If the grade is still too much, the truck will do it's thing and shift to 3rd. At that point put the switch in normal position and the TC will lock normally.

About the only time I use the manual lockup is to keep it engaged for use of the exhaust brake.

Check for full travel of the linkage, it sounds like you are not able to open the pump fully. Have someone sit in the truck (Engine OFF) and hold the throttle to the floor. Pull the lever at the back of the pump to see if there is any more travel available. It sounds like there should be. The FSM has a good description of how to set up the linkage.

racingfanscjww,

Howard is right. I would ads that if you unlock on a grade with a load, make sure to be watching the transmission temp gauge. As in this mode you will be generating lots-o-heat. If the transmission temps really climb up there 3rd locked is a better choice that 4th unlocked, for both EGTs and transmission temps.

Thanks guys, I usually try to keep the rpms up, I usually cruise with the camper around 75 which seems to be the sweet spot for my truck, can usually pull most hills without getting under 1700 rpms and if it does I'll turn off the OD. I noticed mine shuddering for the first time this weekend at Cloud Land Canyon in north Georgia, pulling the camper up a 2 lane that zig-zags up the side of Look out Mountain, with the OD off the power easily gets mph up so you have to ease off the throttle to keep from getting faster than the road will allow, and when you ease off the throttle and the TC locks up at the lower rpm's thats when it would shrudder ( hope this makes sense )
