Driving along the interstate the tachometer started to flutter up and down and the boost dropped out altogether. The check engine light came on also. I checked for the obvious, air filter and induction but all is fine. The lift pump (?) will continue to run after I shut off the engine for about 5 seconds. I have not heard this before. Any suggestions?

Retrieved codes: PO336 (crankshaft position sensor) and P1690 (injection pump and ECM do not agree). Anybody have suggestions?

You need a new CKP (crankshaft position) sensor. The power will be de-rated when the VP44 and CKP are not in sync. Go to Cummins and get a new one, $40 or so. :D

Snowman --- did Evan's suggestion work (i. e. CKP sensor)?

I had a very simiar problem last weekend --- cruising interstate 20 towards Columbia SC and all of a sudden the engine just lost all power ---- smokin like crazy. I had to coast onto the next off ramp. I turned off the engine and let it set for a few minutes then restarted it and it ran fine (can't figure it out). The weekend before that, while pulling my fifth wheel to the mtns. it started bucking like crazy while upshifting into 3rd gear (manual trans, 6-spd). It was so bad that I had to pull over. Aftef checking all fittings, removing the fuel filter and checking it, and draining some fuel from the filter housing, I was advised to try disconnecting both battery terminals (positive leads) and leave it for about 5 min. to "reset" the Engine Control Module (ECM) to the factory default settings. This worked, and my truck ran fine after that --- until the next weekend (see above) ----- I plan on getting it into the shop soon to have it checked out.

Good Luck with yours :D

I replaced the CKP, but the old one was damaged from the tone wheel. Took it to the dealer for repair (obviously internal damage). They said it was the crank, tone wheel and cracked block. I am now into my 3rd week waiting for a short block. I will keep the truck, but I sure missed the 400,000 mile mark!

The information that I am getting is the crank caused the tone wheel problem which in turn cracked the block. "Just one of those things", which I can buy. Nothing is perfect and mistakes are going to happen. No offense to any one, but I wish it was not my truck.
