Need some help here. I have a 00, non HO 5 speed. Fuel filter has less than 1000 miles on it, fuel pressure at idle is between 12-13 lbs. Truck idles fine around 850-900 rpm's. At 60 mph pressure is around 11 lbs. My problem is on again off again, it seems that up to half throttle all is fine above that I have no get up and go. I can floor it and acceleration is gradual if any. At times I can't accelerate up any hills. Last night it did it again, this morning all is fine. I have checked there are no visible fuel leaks. When it did it last night it did stumble a little then stopped. I am currently checking all sensors and controls to see if I can find the problem.

SHobbs:

Do you have boost and egt gauges?

My truck began running poorly in December. The engine would not develop full boost and boost was lower than normal at all rpms. Acceleration was very weak and pulling power was down significantly. Engine would not produce smoke under full throttle and egt readings were lower than normal.

Fuel and air filters were clean but I changed the fuel filter again just to be certain. Lift pump fuel pressure was normal and dealer tech and service manager claimed the engine set no codes. Dealership could not diagnose the problem and told me nothing was wrong with the truck.

Bill Stockard and Joe Donnelly suggested checking the MAP Sensor. I returned to the dealer the third time and asked the tech to check it. To his credit, the young tech's eyes lit up and he acknowledged that the MAP Sensor could be the cause. He read the output, in microvolts I think, and determined it was weak. He replaced the MAP/Boost Sensor and the truck ran normally again.

Since I had that experience I've heard from several other Dodge-Cummins owners who have experienced the same problem. It is apparently a common failure.

Save yourself some money and buy a new MAP/Boost sensor from Cummins. The part is only covered under the 3/36 Dodge warranty, not under the Cummins engine warranty. My local dealer charged me $275 parts and labor to replace it. I think you can buy the sensor from Cummins for around $50. One hour labor to r&r is more than adequate.

I bet your dealer told you that??? I am 99% sure that the MAP is an emissions related item and coverd under the 100K engine warranty. There are dealers out there that will try to pull that "its not covered under the engine warranty" line because they make way more $$ selling you a $50 dollar part and installing it for $200.

You can install a MAP sensor in 10 minutes tops and get them from Cummins for $50-80.

Map sensor location?

Were is this map sensor located? Mine started loosing power yesterday while pulling a 27 foot 5th wheel travel traler. could hardly climb a hill. Also, anyone from minnesota know of a good shop that works on the cummins engine. These dealers want to much for work to be done. They want 130 bucks just to change the fuel filter (to lazy to do it myself) but decided will do it next week when it warms up a bit. Can anyone tell me how to check the fuel pressure myself or do I need to take it to the shop to have this done. 98000 and am thinking the fuel pump might be going. I get this little whining above 2000 rpm which sounds like the belt but don't think so. thanks

RPainter:

The MAP Sensor is located near the fuel filter cannister and transfer pump on the rear, driver's side of the engine.

STAR now tells dealers not to check transfer/lift pump pressure but to check flow rate by allowing the pump to transfer fuel into a measured container.

I suppose your transfer pump could be failing but the symptoms I experienced when mine failed was misfiring when trying to accelerate in a lower gear like a gas engine with a bad spark plug or spark plug wire.
