Reverse Quit Working on Auto Trans

My 04. 5 with 650 miles with the auto trans just decided it really doesn't like to go into reverse. I noticed it a little yesterday, but once I got the RPM's up a little bit, maybe 1400rpm, it started moving. Today when I got into work I went to back my 4000lb trailer up and it wouldn't go anywhere. You can feel when it goes into drive and it will move by itself if you take your foot off the brake.

The reverse on the other hand when you put it in R its just like being in nuetral. I did finally get it to start backing up once I got the RPM's up to about 3000. Once it started moving it went ok. But once you stop and try to back up again its the same problem. Nothing until you get the revs up to about 3000. Any ideas before I have to call the dealer in the AM?

Well I checked the fluid and its right where it should be. Though it smells burnt. I will be at the dealers doorstep tomorrow at 7am. This really pisses me off that a truck with 650 miles already has transmission problems.

I have a friend with a new 600 w/auto who had the same problem after backing his 32 ft RV up his driveway. He burned up his reverse band and drum. Dealer warranteed the transmission even though he has a TSTbox.

Ive seen this before and it was caused by a the linkage to be misadjusted causing the valvebody to not let suffecient flow to where it needed to go causing line pressure to be low thus burning the clutches up.

Well i took it in to the dealer today. The service agent I had had only been on the job 4 days, but has spent the last 20 years in the transmission business. He mentioned the reverse was usually the first to go since it is usually under higher pressure and the rest will usually follow later on. It was his assumption that they would just replace the transmission. We will see though as I haven't got the offical call yet.

They gave me a Durango as a loaner vehicle. I was bummed though as it didn't have the Hemi in it. I wanted to see what that motor could do.

You're not missing much driving the Durango without the Hemi. I drove one and felt that it didn't perform as well as my wife's 03 Durango with the 4. 7. I think the new Durango chassis is too big for any decent performance.

Granted, the Hemi "sounds" cool when you stand on it, but you don't get blinding acceleration, as the commercials make it sound. (Sorry, off topic)

Oh yeah, and I didn't buy the new Durango, becuase the dealer told me that my 03 with 11,000 miles on it, which stickered for 36245 was only going to get 17400 in trade..... I asked him why I should buy another 36000 vehicle that would only be worth 17k in 11 months... . Surpise, No answer :)

Truck will not move!

I have had problems with the transmission not engaging. On about 7 occasions now, I have started the truck, engaged the transmission and the truck revs but does not move. I engage each gear then back to reverse or drive and still will not go. Took the truck to the dealer and they said it had one code, I can't remember the number, but it was miscommunication between two computers. Only one code showed up. They advised me to shut the truck off and restart it. I did that the last time it happened and the truck moved normally. I do feel that there is something wrong and probably the low pressure problem When I tried to back up to my trailer the last time, the truck would barely move while the engine was revving. Fluid is up to normal and these seven instances are over the period of one year, but I am still very anxious about the transmission. I really didn't want a stick after driving my 90 5 speed for 12 years!!.

As an aside--- Dealer finally fixed my right rear door after three visits and many screwups on ordering the parts. AT least I think it is fixed, time will tell. (door would not open from inside or outside and handle was loose, mechanic note said return spring was "wore out", this after 8000 miles and rear doors seldom used!

I talked to the dealer on Saturday and he mentioned that it was some kind of drum that controls reverse that failed. He said the rest of the transmission is in great shape. Guess I get to keep this transmission once they replace that drum along with the valve body and torque convertor. Guess time will tell to see how the rest of it holds up. I was hoping for a new transmission.

Having a similar problem with my truck now as well with only 6000 miles on it. Just towed my grand cherokee this weekend and trailer, had to backup a few times during the trip but nothing major. Now my reverse engages sometimes and not others. Noticed the trans fluid smells burnt and it didn't before the trip. Guess I have to take mine to the dealer now. Really dissapointed.
