six gun questions

My truck let me down today, fired it up after sitting all day while at work and drove it about 5 miles to the fuel station to top it off for the 100+ mile ride home. Pulled to the pump, shut of the engine, topped off the tank (only 10 gallons, I needed a water for the ride!) and then all crank and no start!!! Worked on it about 45 minutes at the station, pulled off both boxes, no start, pulled fuses for all add ons I put on, no start. Called AAA, towed it to my dealership in Detroit still no start. Pulled all the fuses and wiggled the wires by the MAP and Rail Pressure and all of a sudden after an extended (10 second) crank it fired up! Started it a dozen or so times like normal and drove it 60 miles home. Put both boxes back on and all fuses back in and it is running like a champ again. I'm going back to the dealer to put it on a DRBIII scanner but not too hopefule to find anything. Only code was an 0477 while cranking it at the station. Exhaust Pressure Relay Low???? NO idea what that means!!! Anyone have any idea on what to look for? For now I'm going to check with the DRBIII, clear the codes and drive it till something else happens.

Sorry for the long post but it was a long round about way home from work today!!

The 0477 is pretty common with the Pac Brake. It should be called "exhaust brake" relay low. Nothing to worry about. The Pac relay just has a slightly different relay resistance than the Jacobs and the ECM can see that. I get it once in a while also.

If it caught after you messed with the rail and MAP sensor though I would put my money on the rail sensor connection and the Xzillaraider. No flame intended but I sent mine back the same day for rail related issues. No rail, no start.

I would highly doubt that it had anything to do with either plug in box as he stated he had the same problem after he un-installed them and plugged the factory connectors back in. If the rail was the problem it would have set a code identifying that the rail was out of its range.

I agree with Quad, except I didn;t unplug those connectors, I just installed the bypass plug Quad provided. I'm missing a weather boot on my Rail Pressure Sensor plug, think I'll fix that to start and see where it leads. Just fired it up this morning, just like always!

So the XZ harness was still installed and the truck started after you messed with the MAP and rail connections? Sounds to me like it could have still been the rail connection. I thought that these trucks wouldn't start until they saw rail pressure. Is that not correct? What codes would a person get if NO contact was being made at the rail sensor at all?

0192,0193 and depending on the truck operating system it can and will set other various codes. I have even seen IAT codes set when a rail pressure sensor was not plugged in?

The one thing I can guarantee is that if the rail connector was not plugged in or had a bad connection it WILL set a code.

My questions is how can you possibly relate 0477 to a rail or map sensor code? Has it been known for a 0477 to cause the truck not to start? Now you have your answer.

Quick update, went to my dealer today, plugged in the DRBIII and no codes, truck is running great, all boxes plugged in and working. I ordered a rail pressure plug just in case, I know I need the weather boot for the inside of the plug. Other than that i guess I drive it until it does it again or I forget about it! still a little nervous every time I go to start it.

Ease up Quad, I wasn't knocking your product. He messed with two of the connections that your box interacts with and the problem went away. Just stating what seemed obvious to me as far as troubleshooting and asking a simple question. Most of the codes that I've seen mentioned with your box relate to the rail (including what happened on my truck) so it seems logical to me.

As far as the 0477 goes, he stated that he didn't know what it was and I answered. :-laf I wasn't relating it to a "no start condition".

Well I started the truck in the garage last night and spent about a half hour tugging on every wire I could find trying to duplicate the porblem with no luck! I pulled on every connector I could get my hand on (with the engine running!) and shook every harness and never a hiccup. Drove it 120 miles this morning and it is like it never happened. Hopefully it will continue to run as good as it did since now my trust in it is a little shaken. That should come back over time but it will always be in the back of mind if it seems to crank too long. !!!

Good to hear that all is fine again. I understand about the shaken confidence. I get the same feeling in my gut when I'm running the TST and something wierd happens.

Seeing posts like this has kept me from bombing my rig, at least while under warranty. :( :( :(

I'm not convinced it was any of the bombing that caused it. My mechanic and I tore into everything we could while it was at the shop and could not re-create the problem, either with the boxes on or off the truck. Truck ran great today, 220 mile round trip for work and not a glitch. Time will tell!!

Maybe by driving around with the Pacbrake on at all times had something to do with it.

:D :D

Thats the darn problem, I had the Pacbrake off while I was playing with the Overdrive and the truck got mad and quit!! Mystery solved!!!
