Helping a friend with a fuel leak at the back of the pump. 89 d250 6bt. This truck ran fine before, just leaking fuel at the rear head. I pulled the pump and changed the rear seal o-ring only.

Now the truck wont start, kind of acts like it wants to hit, but it won't. Plenty of fuel out of the lines when i bleed them. The tailpipe is pushing a lot of black smoke out during cranking almost in sync with compression stokes. I checked the keyway on the pump (fine).

Tonight i pulled the pump back off and opened the back up to see if i had something wrong, but it looked right as far as i could tell  . Reinstalled the pump, rechecked the keyway, same story..... lots of black out the tail pipe when cranking, kind of hits but won't start, plenty of fuel at the injectors.

Then i thought maybe the injector pump gear jumped a tooth when i pulled the pump. So i took the front cover off... ... . dot to dots on the crank/cam and dot to "e" on the injector gear

I sure would appreciate any input from some of you VE experts. Whatever is wrong here, i did it, i just don't know what. This truck ran fine before, just leaked fuel

Thanks, Dave

When you took the pump apart, did you put the plunger back in with the little tab/ knob lined up right? I forget exactly what it's called, but if you dont get it lined up on the shaft with the key on the pump, it wont fire. It is round, about 1/8" in diameter, and on the back side from the cam plate asembly. Make sure it's lined up with the keyway. Guy at the local shop told me that.

Daniel,

Are you talking about this pin in the camplate? I never removed the camplate, but i didn't check it to see if it is in line with the pump shaft keyway. I guess it could have moved during disassembly

Dave

I got it :D I had the control collar in backwards, so it wasn't passing the helix to relieve at the end of injection

It runs good,

Thanks Daniel.
