I am helping a guy passing though town with an 03 dodge. He said he was driving normal and the truck started running rough and blew out some white smoke and just quit. It did start back up but was noisy and then died and it will not start. I am fairly new to hpcr setup but have decent experience with the vp44 and older dodges. The truck is stock no mods. It is the 305 hp engine. Fuel pump is running and has about 10. 5 psi. The oil level is very high, about 8 to 10 inches up the stick. I loosened the high pressure line coming out of the cp3 to the rail and it just barely dribbles out when cranking. My genysis scan has to have a different insert from the 02 to read the codes so I dont know what is there for sure. I am guessing the cp3 went bad and is leaking the fuel into the crank case. Am I close or need to go further? Thanks.

COULD BE A FAILED INJECTOR OR INJECTORS, MAYBE THE CP3 WENT OUT AND TOOK OUT AN INJECTOR, I AM NOT SURE IF THE CP3 CAN LEAK FUEL INTO THE TIMING CASE PAST THE SEAL, MAYBE SOME ONE ELSE WILL CHIME IN, DEFINITELY DONT TRY TO RUN IT ANY MORE :)

A bad injector crossed my mind until I found I have just a little dribble out of the cp3 high pressure line. I should still have some rail pressure with a bad injector right?

Maybe a failed pressure relief valve? My first guess would have been lift pump, but you say that's working fine. BTW, you should never never never crack open the rail with the engine running - it can kill you.

I thought that a bad relief valve would only send fuel back through the return line? If anything it would cause a loss in pressure to the rail itself, correct?

Yeah, you're probably right. But I thought white smoke and low power could also be caused by a failed valve. Fuel barely bubbling out of the CP-3 wouldn't explain a crankcase full of diesel. Maybe bad CP-3 and a bad injector?

I would never crack the line with it running, it wont start so I dont have to worry about it running. But thanks for the warning.

Bad injector(s), bad FCA could both be the cause of the rough idle, white smoke and no start. While its possible the CP3 could leak fuel into the oil its not that common becuase of its design. More than likely injector went bad while it was running and dumped a lot of fuel into the oil. If you don't have much fuel out of the CP3 high pressure side I would lean toward CP3/FCA problem but not sure how much they actually pump at start.

your cp3 looks to have failed and pressure blew buy the shaft seal and put fuel into the crank case, thats not good at all, or its your injectors leaking fuel into the cylinders---but i think its a cp3 failure.
