1999 quad cab 5spd with 215K on truck. VP44 replaced with a fully updated rebuilt pump from a reliable rebuilder in 2005 at 120K. Truck has FASS 150GPH transfer pump. Edge Comp has been disconnected for last 8 yrs - Smarty used only for towing.

Towed RV 4K miles late Oct. - early Nov. and have been in Montana for the last 3 weeks. Engine started throwing oil out last 300miles, so just replaced Dampner on front of the engine, as well as new front main seal and front cover seal/cam sensor o-ring. Ran truck for about 10 miles round trip after with no problems, then parked for 4 days. Tried to start engine one morning at -5F - would not start and run for more than 45 sec. Engine was missing heavily. Plugged engine heater in and put battery charger on to recharge batteries. 1 day later - battery fully charged, heater up to temp - engine would start and run at high miss for a few seconds, then die. Finally, no more firing at all.
Used Smarty to check codes.

Can temp directly affect the VP44 electronics? The truck is normally in Ohio, where -5F is rare. Daytime temps have been 10-20F.

Thanks,
Jeff

Hows your batteries? They can play havoc sometimes. I'm not into 2 gen/ VP44 trucks, but it looks like fuel pump/ module trouble. As with any module issue, really check your harnesses connections, and if you have any doubt about your batteries, have them tested individually. Good luck.

I have checked for 12V at pin #7 and ground at #5, both are good. Battery voltage is 12.4vdc fully charged, very little drop during cranking. Unless the gel fuel is inside the pump/injectors, the engine is over 100F with the heater plugged in for the last 3 days. I also have full flow from the FASS pump to the inlet of the VP44, getting 15psi fuel pressure.
So far, everyone I have spoken with has indicated that the code 1688 ((internal fuel injection pump controller failure) is a good indicator that the pump is bad. From what I have read here and my own experience, VP44 pumps don't usually last more than 100K miles anyway, so I guess that is a normal replacement cycle.
