Ok I have a 2000 2500 stock I was adding freon to the ac and truck shuts off. Will not start. I get the smarty and clear two codes 1698 and a 0230 I think on second one. The truck will fire up and run only if the cable for the smarty is plugged in to the plug under dash. The other end does not have to plugged to the smarty code reader. As soon as the cable is pulled truck shuts off will not crank? Makes no sense.

update i unplug lift pump still no start without the cable plugged into ecm port. I plug it in and it starts so that would rule out lift pump! this is so weired why it makes a difference if a cord only is plugged into ecm port I dont understand

Why don't you try disconnecting the batteries for a few minutes? maybe the ecm is locked up.

this makes no sense at all why would it run fine with just the cord to the code scanner pluggged into the dash port? The scanner is not even hooked to it! Just the cord and as soon as you pull it from the port engine will die no start you plug just the cord in runs fine no codes as long as the cord is plugged in.

Now this is strickly just a shot in the dark but what if a fuse is blown and when you plug in the cord that gets you 12 volts on the ecm wire that normally comes from the blown fuse? I have a Smarty too and I know that it changes the entire program in the ecm depending on the settings you ask for. It also powers up without the key on. Some of the diagnostic port pins may be put together in the cord to get the Smarty to work properly.

I dont know like said when it is unplugged lift pump runs non stop when plug cord in lift pump cycles normal runs and no codes? This is so strange need somebody with more knowledge than me to figure this out. Theread has had alot of views must have others baffled as well

1698 No CCD messages recieved from PCM. 230 Transfer Pump circuit out of range.

What electrical connectors/wires are near the AC/freon port.

Are any pins or wires messed up near code reader connector?

Well, check the fuse that feeds the injection pump. I forget which one it is but it is under the hood in the fuse block on the drivers side up near the top on the right. I'll give you a little background. I set my holley fuel pump on a relay that is turned on by the VP44 fuse. Now, when I go to change my settings on the smarty, the holley runs the whole time that the 2 minute change over in programming is being done. This fuse gets hot when the VP44 is on and the key is on. I also use my stock intank pump as it is already there and working but wouldn't give me but 2 lbs. pressure at WOT.

Does it have the security feature, with the removable "key" under the dash next to the OBDII connector? I've seen humidity corrode those to where they don't get power through, but it shouldn't shut the truck down... ...

Next, check your wires going to the A/C Compressor. Odd that it shuts the truck off.....

ok seems when the plug is put into dianostic port lift pump doesnt run when unplugged lift pump runs non stop

THAT sounds like an ECM failure or wire loom problem, but I'd look everywhere else, first.

Here are a few thoughts: You said you were charging your A/C, does turning it off or unplugging the compressor make a difference? As far as only running with the smarty hooked up will a regular scan tool make it run? I would possibly find a pinout of the OBD connector and find the ground wire and jump it to a good ground, maybe the ECM is not grounded properly and the smarty completes a circuit. Not sure if that makes sense but its worth a try.

Matt

found it guys the small black ground wire going to passenger side battery had a bad connector! Replaced the end ring terminal good to go!!! Thanks for all the help! I reckon the smarty must have connected a ground circuit to whatever the small black wire went to. Anyways she is running again thanks
