in the heat of the summer what our some of your thoughts on running with no themostat . are the advantages of the cooler under hood temps out weighed with the dis advantages? with no themostat i noticed my temps were frequently just under 150degrees for coolant . with comp on .

the scenario that justified me removing the thermostat was it happened to be stuck so i removed it . while running a 220 +degree temp light load 6k@55mph> out in the miidle of nowhere. thanx.

Too cold and a motor will build up more sludge inside. You need SOME heat to keep things clean.

Without a thermostat, the water temp is not constant. As the motor changes temps, so does the shape of the cylinders. You will get better cylinder sealing, hence better power and economy and cleaner oil, with a thermostat. The motor will last longer too... not really an issue with the Cummins.

I am prone to modify things and throw away all the smog controls I can get away with. But, the thermostat is a GOOD thing. Spend the money for a good one... it is your friend!

Engineers design engines to operate at a given lube oil and jacket water temperature - that's how clearances are established. Letting a cooling system "run wild" is not a good idea.

A stuck thermostat is not the same as no thermostat. Not sure if yours was stuck open, shut, or somewhere in between. If it is stuck half way open the truck will take a long time to warm up in the morning and will over heat when you start to work it hard such as pulling a steep grade.

Removing the thermostat is a bad idea and will lead to engine overheating due to too much coolant passing through the radiator. It will pass through so quickly there will not be sufficient time for the coolant to transfer it's heat to the outside air via the radiator. A review of basic heat transfer will validate my claim.

As someone else has already pointed out, the engine will not reach full operating temperature either. This can lead to oil consumption and reduced service life.

cooling engines

As always I stand to be corrected but. I read some where that if you run without a t-stat that your engine will actually run hotter because the coolant is travelling too fast to remove the heat.

Lets see I remember something about changine the amount of coolant ratio and that changes the point that it boils and ???????? inversly changes the amount of heat pickup. ?????? I don't feel like finding the book or if it was in TDR.
