Well, all of the heat and a/c temp controls work fine, but it's stuck on defrost. Is there easy access to the control? I'd rather know some hints before I start tearing the dash apart! Do I need to find a contortionist? Seems like everything forward of the seats needs some 'special' maneuvers to reach!
 
Defrost is the "fail safe" setting when you lose the vacuum supply to the A/C controls. Check all your vacuum lines for a leak before you tear the dash apart.

yeah, i figured defrost was the fail safe mode, thanks for confirming that. Sounds like a bit of sleuth work ahead! A/C works great, but it freezes my nose and my feet get hot!
 
The most likely place for the problem is the plastic vacuum pipe just before it goes through the firewall on the passenger's side. It is exposed to the heat from the exhaust there. Check inside the pipe connection too. Mine had colapsed from heat inside the connector.
 
OK, the 90 degree vacuum fitting was laying on my downpipe. No big deal, but the vacuum line was also burned near the fitting. Can I replace the fitting? Do I have to replace the whole line?

I'm bettin if you head down to the nearest NAPA with a few pieces of the old line for sizin they'll be able to hook you up.
 
the problem is that it looks to be one piece; tubing with end connector AND it goes into the firewall! i'm gonna do a stop at a couple auto stores to see what i can rig. dang near anything is better than tearing apart the underside of the dash!
 
Trim the ends of the tubing. Get a short piece of small vacuum hose to bridge the gap. Tie it up as far from the exhaust heat as possible. That should work.
