Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Noise coming from muffler?

I installed my new Walker muffler today, and it sounds pretty good. Although there is now a new noise I have never heard before. It is a loud squealing/screaching noise coming out the tailpipe. I am sure it is not the turbo whistle because if I turn the radio off I can hear the turbo whistling separate from the screaching noise. I did go back and retighten all the clamps on the muffler.

Anyone have any ideas?

Are you missing any small pets ? Kidding aside, a squealing sound is pretty strange.



When you say the sound of the turbo is different to the screech, do you mean they're not in lock step or what?



For example, do you only hear the sound when you tromp on the go pedal, or is it at all times?

The screeching sound gets lounder with the more exhaust that is flowing. At first I thought I had a leak at one of the joints but I slid under with the engine running and I couldn't find any soot marks or feel any exhaust coming out, and then I checked all the clamps to make sure they were tight.

Can you hear it idle?



If not, what happens when you deliberately block the end of the tailpipe with a piece of rag or wad of paper?



Another trick is to get a cardboard tube or stethoscope and use it to track down the source of the sound or hissing at idle (be careful with a stethoscope as the sound may be concentrated and at harmful levels).

No I can't hear it at idle. It seems to begin at about 1900 rpms and then continue up from there. And it does stop when I push the clutch in to shift.

I'll try blocking the end of the tailpipe tomorrow and see what that does.

muffler bearings probably need repacked... i have mine serviced by the local dealer every year.

I've tried this muffler on three different trucks, 2 24-valve trucks and 1 12-valve truck and it has done that on all of them. I will not use the walker for this reason.

Yeah it stops when I take my foot out of the throttle.



Would it help if I move the muffler farther back in the exhaust system? Right now it is where the cat was at.

Nothing but replacing it helped me. I tried moving it all over the place and couldn't get that screech to go away.



Too bad really, that's a fairly cheap muffler that alot of guys could use if they weren't making the power to need a 4" system.

Well I still haven't figured out what I'm going to do. I realized today that it sounds just like a squealing fan belt. It seems to be a little quieter after I've put some miles on it so maybe after some time it will go away.

How about contacting the manufacturer or supplier and see if they can do something about it?

When my mufflers on the trucks we workon act up, usually the saw zaw and a piece of tubing fix it or a simple cutting torch, it your preference.

I agree, the turbo is all the muffler a diesel needs. Just hack that thing off and no more curious squeal just the real sound of gobs of torque.

Could you have installed in backwards? So its flowing the wrong way? Just cut it out and get one from Rip Rook!

Sounds like airflow whistle due to an internal baffle defect - especially if it's done it on 3 different trucks...



But then, of course, it COULD be the muffler bearings...

I don't think it is installed backwards, but I am going to try turning it around this week. There wasn't a arrow to indicate flow. I looks exactly the same from end to end so I'm not sure if it even has a flow direction.
