After I started my 07 5.9L I got out and walked around the front & heard a noise best described like when you were a Kid and you used a clothespin to attach a Bicycle playing card to the fender brace or frame and when you rode you had a sound as the card struck the spokes. This is what it sounds like to me.

I looked to see if the fan blade was hitting anything but don’t see any thing. So I shut it down looked every place I could see & I rotated the fan blade several times & no noise of it hitting anything. Before I take it in does or has anyone heard anything like this? I don’t believe this sound is anything I have heard before as standing in front while running it is obvious so it would be hard to miss. I can feel some vibration when I touch various locations like Valve Cover, Alternator etc.

How would you tell, how would you go about testing the punp?

Like I said, don't know a lot about 03's and up. A guy in the park just changed his but I do not know what was wrong with his original. I believe his is an 06 and driven off the serpentine belt. 07 the same ?. From what I understand it is mounted near the bottom of the engine. If all of this is true it may require a startup and crawl under to see if it is. A touchy on the pump while running may give you a vibration that syncs with the sound. Only other way I know of would be a mechanics stethoscope. As stated above you may check for exhaust leak.

For the pump I would start by taking the belt off the pulley and turning it by hand, see if it feels smooth or rough, any weird noises and what not.

Possible idler pulley. Easy fix if bad, it would be even better if you go through it anyway. Sometimes they start to slightly sag, allowing belt to run to one side.

Does the Vacuun pump you mentioned have anything to do with the Jacobs Brake. I'm not sure if the brake is working now. I dont hear a change in the exhaust when it is turned on during 1st AM startup. I assume this brake like the others I have had will close on startup to help warm up the truck, my BD & Pac brake both did that on other trucks. How would you check the vacuun pump to see if it is working correctly

I posted above too quickly. Why i mention this is to do with the noise, maybe the vacuum pump has been going bad for a while & now is making the noise I hear. As mentioned originally I do get a vibration by putting my fingers on various points in the front of the truck. When I rotate the fan I don't hear anything noisy like a bad bearing.

Your sig says 07.5 and Jacobs exhaust brake... so which is it? 07 5.9 with a Jacobs Exhaust Brake or 07.5 6.7 with a OEM, but not Jacobs, exhaust brake?

If it is an 07 with the Jacobs exhaust brake I would guess that the vacuum pump diaphram is torn. That sound is similar to what happened to Dad's 06 when the diaphram tore.

The pump is on the drivers side of the engine, below the radiator belt and above the CP3. It's not horrible to change.

Geno's has a HD version that is quieter, and supposed to last longer.

You can buy just the diaphram, but if the pump has more than 75K miles on it I would just replace the whole thing.

Whatever you do, don't buy it from Dodge/Ram.

If the diaphram is blown out that would show up with a vacuum gauge ?

Yes, with a lack of vacuum. But there isn't really a reason to hook it up. If there is a flapping noise and the EB doesn't work the diaphragm is torn.

Still need the OP to update us on what motor he has thou.

Checked my profile & it lists my truck as a 2007 5.9L, if it was 07.5 as it shows on my posts it would be 6.7L. It also show a lot of other info in my profile that isn’t in my Sig?? I will have to call to see why that is. Sorry for the confusion, this itruck is one of the last 5.9 from Cummins. Truck has less that 50K total. Thanks for pointing that out about the 07.5 listing, no wonder people couldnt figure what I was talking about with a listing of 07.5 with a 5.9L.

Thanks for all the help.
I had been looking at my profile rather than my signature, the profile shows 2007 5.9L so I changed my signature to match my truck. 2007 5.9L.

So what is the recommendation for a new Exhaust Brake, my 98 had a Pac Brake and my 03 had a BD brake, any thoughts on what brake to use to replace the Jacobs brake, Is it going to hurt the engine to drive with a bad vacuum pump until I can get it fixed Soon.

You don’t have to replace the whole brake, just the vacuum pump. I linked a HD replacement pump in post #11.

If you really want to replace the whole thing then look at a PacBrake PRXB. I’ve never been a fan of BD’s setup.

You should be fine. Dad put 150-200 miles on his form diaphragm before we got it fixed.
