Is this the beginning of a problem? Driving home from a business trip recently I think I'm starting to hear a very faint chatter in 5th gear. Shift to 4th and it's quiet. Back to 5th and it's there, but very, very faint. Kinda like a bearing squeal. The "5th gear nut problem" has been fixed by the previous owner and I changed the trans fluid 3,000 miles ago. Any ideas?

Did he show you a receipt that he had it fixed? Did he say where it was fixed? Ones the 5th gear is fixed, I don't believe it comes back.

I've had the exact same noise in my truck ever since I bought it. It sounds like its coming from the shift lever, right? Does it go away when you push forward on the shifter (mine does)? I've been wondering if its normal too. 18000 miles since I bought the truck and the sound hasn't gotten any worse. My guess is its not a problem, but I could be wrong. I'd like to hear what someone else has to say.

I lost 5th at 91k miles. I had a slight noise when coasting along or under light load. It's been to long for me to really describe it now. I fixed 5th and ran it that way until upgrading to the 5600 at which time I pulled the 5 speed down to inspect. Well I found that the main shaft end play was out of spec. (loose). I just assumed this might have been the cause of my noise but I'm not sure as I never fixed it.
