I heard a strange noise twice in the last couple days. It happens right after initial engine start, sounds like a rumble/flutter type noise (turbo bearings ??). It only lasts about 1-2 sec. All acces. were off both times. Seems like a spin-up type of sound, thats gone after oil presure and or idle speed is established. Just woundering if anyone has experienced this. Thanks guys.

Cold weather + increased viscosity of engine oil = all kinds of weird noises due to bearing clearances not being properly lubricated, incomplete combustion.....

Sometimes alternators make some odd noises just after cold start... . they don't like to go into a full or even a partial charge mode on top of having to keep up with the intake heater grid and all other electrical consumers.

The starter could also be hanging up... . mine did it 3 or 4 times (and made some aweful noises... ) before it totally stuck on (bad solenoid contacts... . ) and disallowed me to shut off my engine.

HTH,

Matt

I'd bet on Matt's last suggestion: the starter. Mine has been acting oddly and particularly in cold weather. It sounds sorta like an electric ABS pump pressurizing itself at start-up, only louder. Twice mine stayed hung... I left the motor running, popped the hood and banged on the starter with the handle-end of a hammer; it quit, so I hopped back in a boggied down the road! Again, cold weather seems to make mine worse. I saw a couple comments on here that it's the brushes in the selonoid and is cheap and simple to fix.

starter

You guys nailed it. When it first made the noise, it was so guick I,couldnt make it out . But then I went and pulled starter relay and jumped starter. After a couple times it stayed in for a little longer. Needless to say, starter is out for new contacts & whatever else it way need. . Thanks for the info . :)
