Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Hard Starting

Hello all, I just had a DTT 89% TC and towing VB installed in my truck and, for the most part, I am happy with the results. However, I am getting a metallic grinding noise from the transmission when I shift from D to R or vice versa. Its not all the time and it is very short. Does anyone else experience this with their setup? I thought I had read somewhere that the transmission will do that because of the increased line pressure, but couldn't find it in a search. Also, I am getting a dull clicking sound coming from the rear end area of the truck while driving. Its not that frequent, and seems to have no rhyme or reason when it does it. Sometimes it does it as I let off the gas, sometimes it does it as the transmission shifts, and sometimes it does it when I put it in gear, but it is a different sound than the one above. What bugs me about it is that I got under the truck and had somebody shift gears and I could hear it but not pinpoint it. There is nothing rubbing, it almost sounds like the truck is just flexing and such, but my truck had zero rattles before the install and I hoped to keep it that way. Sorry for the long post, Thanks

Yeah, I did call him right when I got the truck back, but hadn't really settled in with the truck yet. I just wanted to pick your brains to see if anyone else had experienced these.

Just got mine done Saturday, no noise whatsoever... ... ... that is if you don't coun't the woooooohoooooo that seem to come from inside the cab:D

With mine I discovered that I have to pause in neutral before shifting from drive to reverse or to park . You can prove this by shifting into neutral & waiting for the trans to "relax". If you do not hold the brake pedal the truck will lurch forward. :D:

Somethings not right. I plowed last yr with my DTT worked trans,it never made any sounds whatso ever. Ever since the DTT has been in the only new sound is the tires chirping on the 1-2 shift. :D

Grinding noise only in LO range

I've had my DTT 91% setup for about a year and a half, and two fluid changes (AMSOIL). I've had the grinding noise when in LO range mostly shifting from R to P. I previously had a transgo shift kit that worked very well and regret changing. I've had a couple other problems w/the setup and just can't spend any more time trying to figure them out. Maybe some day I'll be up North and get Bill K to look at it. Satisfied? Yes, I guess. Elated? No.

rotohead, dont go from r to park in low range, the grinding you hear is the park pawl,go from reverse to N quickly, then park,it wont grind. The tight TC winds up the driveline, especially in low range, with torque,it grinds when it unwinds as you put it in park. The stock TC is too loose to wind up the drivetrain.

At first I thought it was a u-joint, but after getting under the truck, while someone was shifting, I dont think it is. I need to call Bill, but been busy this week. Im starting to think that maybe something just isnt tight enough, Im also going to go back to the shop that did it and have him drive it while Im in it. I have the unfortunate pleasure to drive many Ford PSD's and they all make a similiar sound when going from DNR, thats what the sound most closely resembles. On a side note, Im still getting used to the truck, its personality has totatlly changed now. I still havent got used to the 2-3 shift, feels like Im going to drop the whole rear end, hits like a hammer. :--)

I've encountered this sort of noise on several vehicles in the past. I don't remember if it ever got resolved. IIRC, it always happened when shifting into reverse. I *think* it happened on Dad's Dodge wagons now and again ('69 and '76), and I believe it happened on my '71 Plymouth wagon. And, IIRC, it would happen most often when the engine was on high idle, or at least 'significantly' above idle. I think it could also be made to happen by hitting the gas before the trans has fully engaged reverse. Does this mean it is somehow related to the reverse clutch?

Hey i would seriously suggest you either take the truck back to your installer and make sure you call Bill. Noises are too open to intrepretation to imagine what you are experiencing just by your words. He is back in the shop tomorrow. In case something is not right i would suggest you dont leave it too long.

Think I have it fixed. Went to the transmission shop this morning, had him ride with me to make sure I wasn't crazy. Afterwards he looked underneath and found a loose transmission mount. Actually, he (hired help) forgot to put the nuts on the mount, so the noise(s) was the transmission flexing. Thanks to all who replied:D
