My A/C compressor has made a terrible noise when I first turn it on. Either sounds like a box of rocks or just a terrible clunk. Once it has run awhile there is no noise upon engagment. This only happens when it is cool, once warmed up there is no noise. This noise is only on the engagment of the A/C compressor. The A/C works just fine, just the occasional noise that worries me.

Yes mine has done it too maybe 5-6 times since I have had it. Theres been some others on here that have this noise. As long as it keeps on working I don't worry about it. I don't have an answer what it is or whats causing it. If it did it everytime I turned it on then that would be a problem.

THWUNK/SCREECH!!!!! initally

Mine does it as well. Scares the hell outa' me every time. I can feel it in the floorboards. My guess is that it won't be a problem until midnight of the last day of the factory warranty. Sure would like an explination though. Would using the fan only (no AC) first then the lowest setting on the AC "ease it in" to operation???

First I am not an ac expert

but here is my take on this issue. Just a minute or two before you shut down for the nite turn the ac off and go to vent ... ..... the one in your face, this will dry out your ducting so you dont get that mildew must smell, second it will unload the compressor and condenser ... ... here is the key , by unloading the system you will not have condensed liquids trapped in the system, then when you start back up it will be working on the vapors, IE; I think the thud you are hearing is liquids that condensed in the compressor after you shut the system down.

I work with alot of big compressors at work and you NEVER start or stop one loaded... ... ... ... . makes sense to me and I aint had no trouble since I started my technique. hope this helps... ... ... ... Kevin

Mine too, a few times. Very loud clunk, going to try the unloading bit. While we are talking AC, what about RPM when you turn it on. I never turn on unless I am around idle speed but I see people do it at freeway speeds. Harm???

I get this too. What I have noticed is that it happens less if I use the A/C more often. So, I try to run the A/C for 5 minutes or so once a week and it is significantly less in noise when it starts up. Remember that the A/C compressor is lubed by the refrigerant.

Thanks

Thanks for all the input. Mine will only do this when the motor is cold, shortly after startup if I engage the A/C at low speed, that is when it happens.

If I run the truck for 5 minutes or so it does not make the noise. I will try to make sure the A/C has been off for some time when I shut it down next time to see if there is any liquid gathering in the compressor.

Thanks

Bill
