Does anybody else have a noisy 4wd shift lever?

I don't think it is related to any particular speed. I thought changing the fluid would help, it didn't. I made sure the shifter knob was tight. I even removed the shifter knob and it is still noisy. I also have an automatic, fluid level is good, if this helps.

Any suggestions?

Finally got around to attempting to fix this problem today. I bought the Mitsu exhaust spring at the dealer, but is seems like the parts guy might have screwed up. Is the spring supposed to be tapered?

Of those that have corrected this problem, what of the 4 fixes did you use?

Sping seemed easiest to me, I thought I'd try that first. Bending the bracket didn't seem like a long term fix IMO.

Ryan, one day the buzz from the shifter was getting to me so bad that I pulled over and borrowed my daughter's elastic hair tie and connected it between the shifter and a screw under the dash, pulled it to the right. That was four years ago,I haven't heard a peep out of it since, only problem is my daughter keeps asking for the hair tie back,I told her she couldn't have it because the color matches the interior perfectly. Easy solution, believe me you'll never notice it's there.

Keep looking at the TSB's. There is a better fix. If you crawl under the truck and look up, you will find a torsion spring already in place. Bend the tab that it is attached to to apply more pressure. Noise goes away! Have had to do this to my '96 twice. Once when I bought it at 30k, and once after removing the trans. (May have been banged in the removal process) Don't waste time messing around with all the hocus pocus, just bend the tab.

Not familiar with the Dodge 4x4 but had a 4x4 shifter rattle on a Ford and put a bungee cord from the shifter rod underneath over to the frame and it worked fine for 23 years that I had the truck

Go to the above link and look for
TSB 21-12-97.
I did this last weekend and it worked. Just bend a little bit and check it.
