Noisy bearing sound upon start up

Truck just rolled over to 50,000 miles. Right after start up this afternoon, I heard what sounded like a worn out bearing roaring. After running a few moments, seem to quiet down. Went on to where I was going and kinda forgot about it. Drove about 30 miles and shut truck off. About 45 minutes later, got in and started up and there was the noise again. And after running a few moments,seem to quiet again. What am I hearing? I hope and pray nothing serious! Any ideas? I am getting a little disappointed with my truck. This will be the 4th major problem I have encountered. I have already had to replace transmission at a tad over 40,000 miles, AC clutch hub literally fell off at 44,000 miles, and just 2 weeks ago while going down the road at 45 mph, the left tie rod fractures and literally falls off to the road and lose steering! Kinda scary!

Is it possible that the alternator is going bad? It should go to full charge upon startup then taper off as the batteries are topped off.

Alternator checked out good. Any more ideas? Come on guys,I need some help and suggestions. ??

Is the starter hanging up? Can you tell where the noise is coming from? Which side of the engine, front or rear?

The belt tensioner will do that as well. Usually with the tensioner pulley you will get a high pitched chirp or squeak after startup and running with the truck in gear. If you want to check the pulley, release the tension on the belt and slip the belt off the idler pulley/tensioner. Then spin the idler and see if there is any play. Check side to side play as well. Any play means a bad bearing. autozone sells the Dayco for about $35. If the idler is bad, just remove the one bolt that runs thru it and install the new one. You may have to remove the entire tensioner assemble to change the pulley.

It is possible that ONE of the bearings on the front of the engine is going bad. This could be the (in order of probibility) Belt tensioner, Water pump, Idler pulley, Main fan bearing, Alternator, A possibility of the fan clutch. You will have to try to isolate the noise, have someone else start the truck with the hood open and your head hanging inside the engine compartment.

Good steps to take. Usually the water pump will start leaking out the weep hole when the bearings start to go. But not necessarily. Good call Gonzo.
