Noisy Tach

Hi all,



I performed a search to find out the solution to this noisy tach of mine with no luck. Hopefully you all can throw some advice this way.



The tach has been getting noisy the last month or so, especially when cold. I assume there is a belt, similar to the old speedometers. Is there a way to lube this belt before it breaks?



Any suggestions? I sure would appreciate it!

The tach is electronic, no cables or belts. The noise you are hearing is probably the plastic on the dash squeaking. Try pushing on it in different spots to see where it's coming from.

Thanks. It makes perfect sense that the tach would also be electric, but judging from the sound, I could have sworn it was belt-driven.



The sound can best be described as a "chirping" noise that follows the RPM of the motor. At idle, it is a more defined noise, and with increased throttle, the chirp runs faster. I can't figure out what else it could be. I am sure it isn't the plastic though. Already tried that!

Chris, another part that sometimes will chirp is the aluminum VIN tag up on the dash at the bottom of the windshield. Give it a poke and see if it stops singing.

I will check on that, too. I haven't thought of that yet. It just puzzles me why it would be more audible when the motor is cold.



I'll try the VIN trick (give her a poke).

Well, the noise was getting to me, so I grabbed the stethascope to find the origin. Oddly enough, it seems to be coming from my Boost gauge, which is an Autometer 0-60 Ultralight. I don't understand why this would be making a noise. I have yet to check the tightness of the line coming into the gauge.



Any ideas?

Chris, I'm not familiar with the Autometers but assume they are mechanical not electrical with a sender. Most of the noisy mechanical boost gauges that I've run into buzz more than chirp, a leak hisses. Most gauge noises stem from rapid pulsations in the pressure, sometimes so fast that the gauge reading isn't affected. A chirp may be caused by the boost tubing rubbing on something else as it pulses, check that out, it seems that it would be more cold weather related. A gauge snubber or sometimes just coiling up extra tubing rather than cutting it will also smooth out the pulses.



Another source of chirping can also be the 4WD shift lever, usually just holding the lever will identify it.
