i just bought this truck a few months ago and love it and the noise. but i'm going to haul my 5er to a lot of RV parks and they might not like the noise. i have an afe intake is that the reason it is so loud? if so i know it was put on to make it breath easier but is there something else quieter? thanks robert

Intakes don't add much noise in the big scheme of things. Knocking the muffler out will make the Cummins a lot louder. Mine is missing the muffler, love it. As long as you have the muffler installed I wouldn't worry about the noise. Its close enough to stock that no one will have much of a leg to stand on if they don't like the noise as long as your not idling for long periods.

Do you carve decoys or just static displays?

LOL!! :-laf

Dont worry about it... ... .

We frequent RV parks. Over 1/3 of the trucks in there (sometimes more) are Dodges.

You make it sound like you are going to be the only one with a noisy truck...

You should here an H. O. with a few mods on it... . Sounds like the thing is coming apart. Lots of H. O. 's (manuals) in the parks.

Just dont get up to go out for ice cream at 2 o'clock in the morning and you'll be fine... . :-laf (Or you'll be getting some dirty looks in the morning. )

The '02 HOs are the noisiest trucks of all. Is there a liner under your hood? A few '02s got 'em, most of us got short-changed. I've done a bunch of noise-reduction modifications. Do a search on "noise reduction" if the subject interests you. Granted, my reduction efforts have been for the benefit those inside the cab, not outside the cab. I've long since given up drive-thru restaraunts and banks. There is a company that advertises on the TDR that makes valve cover "blankets". They're quite pricey by my standards, but might be worth it to you if you are sensitive about disturbing the neighbors with your noisy truck.

Otherwise just smile and know it's understood, as indicated in the advice given by the previous posters in this thread.

Neil

You must be really fast because you were haulin' a** when I passed you :D

thanks gentlemen for your info and moral support. basicly what i'm going to do is print a copy of your replys and give them a copy when they complain. it will give them something to read while i'm driving off... lol i did look under my hood and it is naked... what was dodge thinking. can you buy the hood soundproofing from dodge or after market? i think that would help a lot. i dont think my rig is a HO. thanks robert

Dont worry about the noise, everyone in RV parks are used to it. If possible dont check in real early in the morning or late at night and you should be okay. Happy RVing and have a good time. :)

Duck,

Forget about it!!

Your fine... ... Your rig is not an H. O. (You have an Auto. right?). Only the Manuals were H. O. 's in the 2nd gens.

Sorry if I was a little too sarcastic earlier... ... ..... Go camping, have fun and dont go for ice cream at 2 in the morning... . :-laf (been there done that and had the dirty looks)... . LOL!! :D

Give em some turbo whine on the way out too... ...

The Ford guys always look or turn around. The GM guys are too busy dealing with mechanical problems or tow trucks. :-laf

Best Regards,

Give her what she wants... Biodiesel!!! :D It reduced the knocking and clatter on my truck quite a bit :)

You can also go to the older heavier valve cover 98. 5 to 2000

do a search and there is a member than went a long way to quiet the mighty cummins down. dont remember his name though. There is a company that sells quiet kits for our trucks. I wrapped my downpipe with header wrap and sealed the wrap with high temp silicone paint and that seemed to help with the clatter. i had a straight pipe and loved the sound but it got old at highway speed.

I don't think the hood insulation does much as I have it and my truck is by no means quite. I have heard them side by side with and without. doesn't seem to make any real difference. I drive mine in to the parks, and see more diesels towing than anything. they don't seem to mind. ( mid-day anyway)

WVO or bio will do more than anything to quite it down

I couldn't believe it the first time I used it.

In this day and age,we have a new breed of pedestrians that walk out into traffic at will, especially at corners. We 2nd gen-24 valvers don't seem to have half as much trouble. These trucks are so darn loud even a deaf person can sense them coming.

yeah , I do prefer my vehicles loud, for safety reasons of course.

my other car has an external wastegate eith an open dump, you think your straight pipe dodge is loud

I think I read on here that most (or a lot) of the noise is coming from the bottom of the motor. My 12 valve is a lot quieter on grass or soft dirt than asphault. Genos sells some underhood stuff. Some guys have put lead in their cabs, but that only quiets the inside. Having been through campgrounds with a straight pipe 12 valve, people are used to it. Just not too late or too early! Have fun!

LOL, not trying to give ya a hard time, but when on grass the sound of our engines is not echoed back like on pavement, it is absorbed by the ground. As far as our engines on a 24v the VP makes just about as much racket as the injectors do popping off. I would not waste your money on the "blankets" to wrap up your engine. Instead be proud, although the 24v are very loud the first gen 12v's and 2nd gen 12v's have been pulling campers for years, and going in and out of parks without incident, enjoy your truck and have fun.

Quiet and 24V don't belong in the same sentence. Since everyone can hear you coming and going its more important to just take it easy on the go pedal.

I love it :-laf
