I had changed the oil in the Getrag before I started reading this site - the guy at the auto parts store said to use 5W-30 oil, but did not say anything about synthetic. So, is this thing going to be OK to drive for a couple of weeks until I can drain and refill it? It's already got over 200,000 miles on it. It seems to be working fine now, but I don't want to damage it by driving it with the wrong oil in there.

I say you should be fine. I bet the factory didnt put synthetic in there. Synthetic will just stand up to higher temps than conventional oil. It's alot better than gear oil in it. You did overfill by one quart ? Bill

I didn't know about overfilling it, either. I do have an extra quart of the same oil I filled it with at home - I'll put that in when I get home tonight

You should be ok with the dino oil in there till the next change. If you have any small leaks, the synthetic will clean them out and make them into big leaks, so that is something to look at first. I pulled my shift tower and poured the extra oil in there. A little more involed than some guys want to get, but I figure if I'm towing 10-14K every day, I need all the help I can get. I NEED an Eaton 7 speed and 3. 07s (I know, they're a pain to come by, but since we're dreaming... ), but we'll have to see how good business is this summer.

I keep saying I'm going to weld a nut and plug on my left PTO cover to fill it, but never seem to have my ducks in a row when it comes time to change it.

I pulled my pto cover and drilled a hole 1 inch and welded a pipe half coupler on and screwed on a street 90 and plug in the top. I think i can go 3 quarts over If I wanted. Never used sinthetic oil before and I beet that truck to death.

My simple method of overfilling, take out a PTO cover bolt, pour oil into clean cup, use big plastic syringe and squirt oil into bolt hole. It doesn't take long to put the extra quart in.
