Harvey,
I and others are not obsessing over fuel mileage so we can complain about it, at least I am not.
I track my mileage and other items on my truck for a trend analysis. I use this as a base line to know if issues will arise that need to be looked at. I guess this is the engineer in me coming out. I was trained to use trend analysis to identify potential failures and to avoid them.
This is very similar to what other user are using the oil analysis from testing companies for. The testing company uses trend analysis to identify what may fail in the engine by identifying high wear items in the engine oil analysis.
I am just trying to be pro-active less expense to fix before a complete failure occurs.
Jim

Jim,

My post was intended as a comment about the thread subject in general and not intended to criticize you.

It is a subject that often comes up and always results in proving the old line that says the first liar never has a chance. No matter what someone claims someone is going to come along behind him and claim he gets higher fuel mileage.

As a result of reading many posts in TDR over the years and walking away from many dumb comments at the fuel islands over the years the subject bores me and I ignore it.

IMO there is nothing at all wrong with keeping good records and analzying trends for evidence of developing problems. I understand how engineers think.

TulsaOkie is a rare participant on fuel mileage threads and I commend him also. He appears to be a commercial hauler who knows what he is talkinga about and posted the truth. Truth is often forgotten when men gather to discuss their prowess with women, fishing, or fuel mileage.

I probably should just shut up and forget but when Mr. Barlow starts calling people liars when all we are doing is responding to a question I will take exception to it. I reported honestly what I was getting with my new truck and I am proud of the Dodge cummins for what it is doing. My latest figures which were hand calculated were 18. 5 mpg so stick that in your pipe and smoke it. #@$%! #@$%! #@$%!

Dave

Getting about 17-18 HWY (best cruising speed on Interstate is 77 mph) and 14-15 around town with a reasonable foot hand calculated. Really can't complain about the 6. 7L or the fuel economy considering this truck is a 7,000lb beast.

My last truck, a 99 Dodge Ram 1500 quad cab with a 318 gasser, got 12 in town and 14 on the highway on a good day!

After almost 20,000 trouble free miles, the truck just seems to run better and smoother now that it's starting to get broken in.

In order to find a truck with better mileage, I'd have to get a Honda Ridgeline or a Toyota Tacoma!

Dodge-Cummins ROCKS!

All I know is around town I'm getting under 13 on the overhead and the calculated value is usually 1 to 2 mpg lower. This sucks.

If I drive it hard my fuel mileage around town drops to around 12. Some moderation with the right foot and shifting before the RPMs get above 1600 generally keeps it just over 14 around town. 15 is the best I've seen in town and I wasn't winning any stoplight drag races that week. :-laf

Steady freeway driving is consistently 17 or better hand calculated.

I'm completely satisfied with the performance, reliabilty, and fuel economy of my ISB6. 7. I have no idea what the fuel mileage is and spend no time thinking about it. If somebody asks me I tell them I don't record the purchases or mileage, don't calculate the fuel usage, and don't know. It's probably about 10mpg towing and 14-16mpg empty but that's only a guess. It may be less. It is what it is.
It speaks for itself.

How can you call us liars when you can't prove it, by your own words. I have not responded to your posts and threads for just that type of rudeness and getting personal with name calling in the past. If a member disagrees with your opinions, you get personal. I'm breaking my silence responding to your posts and threads, because I'm not a liar, and I have posted honest results, even the first road trip with my C&C in 07, with an extensive report with the overhead as well as hand calculated MPG and I still have the receipts and records too prove it. that is not what I get today, due to engine breakin at 30K+ miles, but that is what I get, even if you don't believe me. I hope in the future you take into consideration the next fish story you hear is the truth, and the next time someone at the pump claims 50 MPG when towing, you at least be nice about it, unlike you can be here, on TDR. The MPG varies due to altitude, quality of fuel, conditions, inaccurate calculations, (not lies) personal habits and believing the overhead, which by the way was real close to my hand calculated numbers on the first C&C trip after a 2K mile round trip.

My apologies TDR, I had too vent. ;)

Your post sounds like you are looking for a reason to feel mistreated and this may disappoint you but your personal issues are of no concern to me.

Please copy and paste my post where I called you a liar. I don't remember you even being a participant in the thread.

Intelligent people with adequate reading comprehension could read this thread and understand. If you're not smart enough to recognize that I was posting to NO specific individual but to the subject of worrying obsessively about fuel mileage you have a problem.

Read your post #21 again and you called more participants than me liars with that post. I dont remember you contributing anything of substance to the original post so why dont you just stay off.

Dave

SteveOsborn, wellcome to TDR, and yes the MPG reports are so far apart from one another, thats normal. You will have too calculate your own, but don't get frustrated yet, your true MPG wont be known until about your 20K mile mark due to breakin on your CTD. Just enjoy the awesome power and reliability of the CTD. I have a 3500 C&C so you can't compare to mine but it is 8-9 MPG towing at 22K and 14-16 empty at 10K GVW. My 04. 5 2500 is pre DPF and gets a lot better as you can imagine, at 20. 7 MPG empty at 70MPH and 13-15 towing at 21K GCVW. City driving I ignore because it is so variable. There are a lot of people that will argue those numbers, but thats what I get. ;)
I guess you were so bored posting on a subject you don't care about, you missed it. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Thanks mules4me, looks like I'm not the only member on TDR, that can't comprehend what I read.

Folks, I will continue to post my opinions when and where I wish.

You have two choices regarding my posts. Read them or don't read them.

You guys who think I called you a liar have not cut and posted a post written by me with your name in it and I haven't been able to find one.

Perhaps you identify with my general statement about exaggerated fuel mileage claims?

I have to agree with Harvey, there are a few exaggerated fuel mileage claims here. I can not believe some fantastic mileage averaging 75 mph. Lets not forget, these are nearly 8000 lb monsters we drive.

Grizzly, its like every time you tell another stranger about the size of fish you caught, it seems to get bigger and bigger, :-laf but do they call you a liar and walk away, there is a difference, besides you might just be telling the truth! He insinuated that members were liars by his general accusations in post #21, the proof is in his own words, but he is too opinionated too see it.

But thats no reason to put people down like HBarlow keeps doing. This is not the first time he has expressed his opinion in a rude manner. I am a member that has experienced his rudeness first hand in the past, and just because we disagreed, it didn't give him permission to call me names and insult me. It can be a good thing to have a difference of opinions, because you can learn from them, but not if you are so opinionated, you will cut off your nose despite your face. The one thing I have learned over my lifetime is, you can always learn something new, even if you have been doing it for a long period of time.

This will be my last post on this subject, I don't care if he posts here, after all this is a free country (well maybe not after the next few years) and he paid for his membership, but I just wish he would not insult me and other members because he has a different opinion. He has a lot of good ideas and experiences that we can all learn from, and I have met him in person and he is genuinly a nice guy, but has a bitter way of expressing his opinions sometimes.

RVTRKN, I read and re-read Harvey's post 21 and I don't read in it what you did. Harvey never called anyone a lier, he only expressed his opinion. I'm okay with that. That's the reason why we're all here, to express our opinions.

I don't want to take sides here, but I do consider Harvey a friend. He has a great amount of experience and one of the most knowledgeable people I know on our trucks and RV's. Okay, he does hate Furds. I do too.

There's no way Harvey could call you a lier, because you posted some very realistic fuel mileages early on this thread. Some posted figures that are not realistic.

I hope you and I don't get cross wise over this because I enjoy reading your posts and want to be your friend also.

Hey guys, hope I didn't start any bad feelings by asking about fuel mileage. I was purely curious as to what I may expect from my truck. Hope all have a happy Halloween!

21. 22 MPG with the new Intake Horn - Dodge Cummins Diesel Forum

If you guys want some interesting MPG claims, click on the above link. Geeeez... my 2004 Dodge Neon SXT (2. 0L & auto) barely gets what some of those 25--26 mpg 6. 7L's get. :-laf

I voiced my opinion and I almost felt as if I were going to be lynched.

:-laf

By the way, I've gotten as high as 18. 2 mpg on a trip to Panama City Beach, FL (gotta love Alabama..... it's relatively flat) and my last fillup yesterday was 15. 972 with mostly rural country roads.

You asked a legitimate question, and our opinions got in the way. I hope it wont discourage you in the future. Again, welcome to TDR, and yes I had a great halloween :)

This thread should be moved to the "Other" discussion forum and maybe renamed, "Are you lying about your MPGs" ... ... too funny!:-laf

Not sure why HBarlow needed to get combative in his follow-up responses, but it's fair to say there are folks who tend to embellish on the facts of their true mpg's. However, HB didn't need to paint such a broad picture of the guys out there, who are getting great mpg's, as "liars. "

Being a new guy here, SteveO, you asked an honest question and all you were looking to know was what others were getting for mpg's, not whether some guys are lying about the mpg's they are getting.
