Without cooler, what is a normal temperature for the NV5600 when cruising??

Changed to Royal Purple Synchromax last night and brazed a 1/8" fitting for a sender in the passenger PTO cover... ran about 25 miles and it got to around 110*s from 50* ambiant... what is "normal"?

Also, the RP is much better than the Pennzoil fill I had in the truck... the truck just glides now... never figured it would help driving down the road, but it feels so much freer on the road and it was the only thing I changed... the PZ was crystal clear...

steved if you tow I would be interested to hear your transmission temps. I think putting a temp gauge in a manual is a good idea even though few people do it. I have one in my '96 and normal driving it gets up to 160 in winter and 180 in summer. Towing it's been up to about 230-235 but most of the time around 210.

I've posted this before but keep an eye on the fluid because Synchromax is thinner than the stock stuff and livingez on NW Bombers (hotshotter) fried the Synchromax he put in his NV5600 within 10,000 miles. Came out cruddy and dark. His transmission failed shortly thereafter but it may have had more to do with the trans than the lube.

Noted, I will keep an eye on it... I do very little towing...

On the drive home lest night, anything over 65mph and it was about 180*... under 65mph and it was about 160*... under 55mph and it was under 150*...

Keep in mind that this is with 4. 10s, so the 5600 is spinning a little faster at speed than a 3. 73 equipped truck at the same speed...

Since there is really no way for the heat to escape the cast iron case and it is more or less connected to the engine (as a heat source), temps were about what I expected...

The transmission shifts a whole lot better with the RP than it did with the PZ fill... mileage is also up some, but that might also be partially caused by increasing the fuel pressure to the CP3... I hate springs...

That's pretty much what I see with my NV4500.

Just a little FYI:

Less than 500 miles and I'm dumping the Royal Purple Synchromesh... shifting is getting harder, temp is running 175ish (all the time), doesn't seem as smooth as it was...

Going back to the PZ synchromesh... at least it lasted a while... will do a dump and fill this weekend. I was considering the Amsoil stuff, but after swaying one time to something else (and having issues), think I'll just stick with the synchromesh...

Really disappointed in the RP... and to think that I just bought another 6 quarts to do the tcase because I had heard such good comments... a lot of money to simple throw away...

I ran Redline MTL in my NV5600 on my '01 for a long time and was happy with it. It's quite a bit heavier than the RP, the Vis @100C is 10. 6 whereas the RP is only 7. 7. I ran it in my '03 too with the same results.

I started anther thread about this in the products thread...

Vaughn: Thanks for that link, I just ordered a case to give it a shot... seems there are a lot of people having good results with the Redline...

Also have had good luck with the redline MTL. Went all redline in the transmission, transfer and axles. Run redline in all of our BMW Motorcycles and it helps everywhere.

I have a case of Redline sitting at the house... currently on my second fill of RP after the "flush"... and while the new fill is much better than the first fill of RP, it doesn't seem much better overall than the PZ I was running... so I might drain it and try the Redline myself... see what it does...

I got to get this transmission oil thing figured out before I run to New Mexico in June...

OK, took the second RP fill out (in less than 600 miles due to shifting difficulties), filled with Redline MTL...

"normal" driving: 150* city, 195* highway (65mph)...

"towing" (around 7k): 180* mixed, 230* highway (65mph)...

I don't think these are too bad... the RP seemed to run cooler longer, but the MTL's shifting characteristics have not changed in over 800 miles... I'm going to take a look at the fluid's condition this week, and if it still looks good, add another quart (overfill) to the transmission... as recommended by another member...
