Ok - don't yell - but I change my oil every 5,000 miles - very easy to remember. I tow only a very light boat - use the good strat filter - cummins blue oil - have 49,000 miles in 11 months. Now - what should one expect in oil consumption, i. e. a quart in 5,000 miles - a 1/2 qt or what do you think. It has to use some - heck the breather where it blows by uses a little.

If I lose any it would be unmeasuable. I have 80,000 on it. I also change oil at 5,000 intervals and I tow 6- 12,000 about 300 miles a month in the mountains.

Ditto E-9. I can't see where the oil has dropped in 5000 miles. I have 44,000 on mine, very little towing, but occaisionally hauling 3000 lbs in the bed.

I have 80K on my truck, use Mobile Delvac, change about every 12K-15K. I have towed my 13000 lb 5th wheel about 6000 miles in the last 2 months and havn't had to add any oil. It shows down about 1/4 in on the dipstick. Pretty amazing.

I have 168K on mine and no observable oil drop between changes at 5K miles. It gets black a little faster, but that's the only difference from when it was new. Actually, it runs better now than it ever did. Finally getting broke in I guess.

MIne always used about 2 qts in 7500 miles, to about 70,000 miles. Now it does not use a drop.
I ran Rotella 15W-40 for the first 36,000, then switched to Amsoil 5W-30

My 3 Cummins before this one would use 1 qt in 6000 miles, no synthetics, always Premium Blue or Rotella.

All right, Joe! That's the stuff I like to hear; this is why I chose the Cummins over the competition. I'm only up to 40k now, but, that's not too shabby since I only bought it last June. And it's getting better mpg and lower wear rates now than at 20k. Like others, if I'm getting any drop at all between filter changes (7. 5k), it's less than a quart and really not observable on that way-long dipstick.

Change every 5000-7000 miles, depending on highway vs. local driving habits. NO noticible oil consumption, 24,000 miles.

HC,

There was a post on here last year by a guy with a FL60 with one of these engines. He had 380K or so on it and he decided to pull the head to take a look. He could still see the hone marks on the cylinder walls so he just buttoned it back up again without messing with it.

BTW: Once in a while I'm in your neck of the woods. I think I'm related to all the old families in Yell Co. , especially around Mount George and Ola.

In 1800 miles I added 1 quart. Valvoline PB is in the truck now, and 25% of the 1800 miles was towing light loads. The truck has 80 some thousand on it right now. The previous owner always used Rotella T.

I'd like to add that if I were going by the marks on the dipstick alone I was in the middle of the safe range, which is obviously 1 quart low. I think it's odd that the safe range on the stick is a difference between having 9 quarts in there or 11 quarts.

The question I have now, is those of you that said you didn't burn oil, are you saying that the oil mark on the stick was still in the safe range (and you didn't need to add oil), or are you saying that the oil was at the full mark when you dumped it?

Just wondering because I thought a quart per 1800 miles was a bit much, but after another 1000 miles it isn't down at all #ad

So far my truck has not used enough oil between changes to show on the dipstick. I change my oil every 4,000 because of a lot of short trips where the truck doesn't have a chance of warming up. I have 17,000 miles on it so far. My dad has a '94 and his truck has never used oil from day one either.

Edit: Forgot to mention that we both are running Delo 400

When I said no observable I meant that it didn't show on the dip stick. Obviously, it uses some oil because of the blowby tube mess.

Using AMSOIL 15W40 and tow 7000lbs once a month. If I pull hard I might use a 1/2 qt every 5K but that would be the upper limit. Unloaded virtually no comsuption.

32k on engine,

My engine has used less than 1/2 pint in the last 2 -5k mi changes with over 8k of that towing using Delvac 1300 Super 15-40. Prior to using Mobile the Valvoline would run through at a quart to quart and a half in 5k. Looking for oil ratings as looking into Dello 400 if other ratings of said concur w/ LE's rating of Dello 400.
