Hi all, I'm interested in what you all are finding to be "Normal" as far as oil consumption for this diesel. Seems I'm using more oil than I did in the PSD.

Cheers, Steve J.

My old 96 had 160K on it and went down about a quart in 4 thousand miles. I'm guessing it leaked as much as it burned.

At 7500 miles mine is not down a bit, not even a difference on the dipstick, still that way after 135K miles too... ... .....

How many miles do you have on this truck? And how much oil are you talking about in what distance? I'd say if your adding more than you would to a high mileage powerstroke, you've got something wrong somewhere... if its not alot of wear due to really high miles. You dont hear about the Cummins comsuming alot of oil to often. At least I cant remember the last time I saw a thread on it.

Mine wont use oil even if I try, and in my last job I had a 92 1st gen with over 200k of the hardest miles you could put on a CTD and you couldnt make it burn oil. Based on my experience and talking to lots of guys I thought this things just dont burn oil. I wonder if you have something going wrong with yours???

My 99 has only 31K on it, the oil has only been changed 3 times (synthetic) and has never needed any added between.

I assume the truck is used and new to you? Have you changed the oil and if so what was the condition of the old oil? Was the previous owner a light foot or a lead foot? Lots of idle time/low speed running can contribute to deposit buildup on rings which can contribute to higher oil consumption. Check the condition of the intake hose from the air cleaner to the turbo, lots of dust residue may indicate a air filter problem in the past even if the element is new. Any signs of leaks? How about the crankcase vent tube; they can leak quite a bit but it should show up as oil coating the front axle, etc. The turbo seals may be leaking a little, but you should have blue smoke if it is bad at all.

We had a farm tractor with a B series in it that started using 2 quarts per day when farming. It had a bad seal on the exhaust side of the turbo. Could be something similar?

I know this is 24 valve section, but my 94 12v has 382,000 miles. In its lifetime, it has had two oil changes.

Yes, two.

One at around 700 miles from the factory fill to Amsoil Marine. One more when the filter system head was updated and the system was contaminated by this procedure.

Fresh filters every 50,000 and samplings done, but that is it.

(The amsoil dealer who bought it new was trying to prove a point. )

He did too!

It sucks a quart every 5,000 or so, but most of that ends up on the ground, not out the pipe. VERY little, if any, "breather exhaust" on it also.

I agree that you need to check things out. Could save a bundle to find it now instead of later.

Mine...

will drop about a quart on the stick between the 5,000 mile change intervals. It has since it was purchased new in '99. I never add any and the rear main is still not seeping at 143,000+ miles! I love this engine!:D

According to Mother Cummins,

Cummins Engine Company, Inc. defines “acceptable oil usage” as 400 miles/quart (675 KM/Liter) for the 6B engine family.

This seems excessive to me.

I don't use a drop between 4k oil changes. My "slobber"tube seems to be slobbering a little more at 74k,but still don't use no oil... Doug

My truck has 31,000 and change it every 7500 now and it burns nothing between changes, may be 1/2 qt. or less. I tow a trailer with it too.
